Salary: £32,080 - £34,610 per annum depending on experience (with potential to reach £36,636)

The Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Senior Electronics Technician to support practical teaching and laboratory activities across the School of Engineering’s electronic laboratories.

Working as part of a skilled technical team, you will support taught modules, student projects, and research activities while contributing to the development of new laboratory experiments and facilities.

You will be involved in a wide range of student-led projects and research initiatives involving:

  • Analogue and digital circuits, including troubleshooting and fault finding
  • Printed circuit board (PCB) design, prototyping and assembly
  • AC/DC low-voltage motor drive systems
  • Microcontroller based systems (Microchip PIC, Arduino, and Raspberry Pi) including embedded programming
  • 3D-printing and basic CAD design for prototype components

You will design, demonstrate, operate and maintain specialist electronic equipment, ensuring all work is carried out safely and effectively. You will also instruct and guide students in the use of laboratory equipment and processes, including oscilloscopes, power supplies, signal generators, data acquisition systems, and microcontroller platforms.

To be successful in this role, you should have substantial practical experience in an electronics environment, ideally within a teaching workshop or laboratory. You should also have demonstrable knowledge of analogue and digital electronics, PCB design, and electronic systems.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support teaching activities by preparing laboratories and demonstrating practical techniques, equipment operation, and safety procedures, ensuring students gain hands-on experience and understanding of electronic engineering principles
  • Design, develop, and construct specialised electronic circuits and equipment for teaching and research purposes, providing technical guidance on modern hardware and embedded programming platforms
  • Produce electronic schematic diagrams and PCB layouts using CAD software, and manufacture, assemble, and test experimental equipment to support teaching and research activities
  • Set up, maintain, calibrate, and PAT test laboratory equipment, ensuring laboratories remain safe, organised, and fully operational
  • Manage consumables and component stock within laboratory and workshop stores, and maintain the School’s equipment asset register
  • Promote safe working practices by supporting risk assessments, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and laboratory safety processes across all facilities
  • Work collaboratively with the Technical Team Leader to support the day-to-day operation of designated teaching and research laboratories, including housekeeping, health and safety inspections, and maintaining up-to-date documentation
  • Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade and nature of the role

The Person - Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

Essential Technical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of the design, maintenance, servicing, and repair of electronic equipment and circuits
  • Experience programming embedded microcontrollers in C/C++ (e.g. Microchip PIC, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, or similar platforms)
  • Familiarity with PCB design software (ideally Altium Designer or equivalent)
  • Experience using electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, and laboratory power supplies
  • Practical experience of PCB assembly, including through-hole and SMD soldering, rework, and fault diagnosis

Essential Practical Experience

  • Relevant experience within a technical or electronics-based role
  • Hands-on practical experience within a workshop or laboratory environment
  • Experience supporting teaching laboratories, student projects, or practical technical activities

Essential Professional Skills

  • Strong technical problem-solving and fault-finding abilities
  • Good understanding of Health and Safety procedures within a laboratory or workshop environment
  • Ability to contribute to the design and specification of practical electronics activities and experiments
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and teamwork skills

Qualifications

  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Electronic or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent Level 4 qualification), or significant relevant technical experience
