Fixed Term Contract

  • Grade: C-
  • Salary: £35,412 - £44,075 (consultation grade – subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review)
  • Hours: 36.5 hours per week
  • Location: Mental Health

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Enforcement Officer to join the Planning Enforcement Department at Birmingham City Council. This is a great opportunity to make a meaningful impact in an exciting environment and work in a large, diverse city.

As a Senior Enforcement Officer, you will:

  • Process, investigate, and manage enforcement complaints.
  • Oversee caseloads throughout the entire journey of a planning enforcement case.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate records using multiple IT systems.
  • Undertake site visits and attend meetings across the city in connection with enforcement cases.
  • Carry out a range of enforcement action when required.
  • Engage effectively with public or businesses, providing first-rate customer service to stakeholders.

Responsibilities & Key Tasks

  • Apply comprehensive investigative skills to make accurate, informed decisions based on evidence.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service, including in conflict situations.
  • Collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including business owners, members of the public, and colleagues across the organisation.
  • Drive reliability—meeting targets and deadlines under pressure.
  • Flexibly manage workload, including times outside standard office hours when necessary.

The role also requires you to:

  • Be an experienced driver who is comfortable travelling throughout Birmingham.
  • Use your own vehicle while in post (remunerated for miles travelled).

Requirements

  • Strong problem-solving ability, with the ability to apply principles correctly and independently.
  • Proven effective communication in both written and verbal formats, including clarity under contentious circumstances.
  • A track record of working confidently with the public and stakeholders, including sometimes engaging with dissatisfied or demanding individuals.
  • The ability to travel efficiently around the Greater Birmingham area, driving your own vehicle comfortably and safely.
