Want to help shape a major infrastructure project from the very beginning?

Are you passionate about engineering excellence and delivering projects that will support the UK's energy future?

If you're ready to play a key role in developing one of the UK's most significant infrastructure programmes and want the opportunity to influence its success from the earliest stages through to delivery, this is your opportunity.

When you join Laing O'Rourke, you'll become part of an industry-leading engineering and construction team delivering some of the UK's most complex and rewarding infrastructure projects. We are committed to investing in our people through structured development, continuous learning and long-term career opportunities, supporting you to build a rewarding career with us.

About The Great Grid Upgrade

The Great Grid Upgrade is the largest overhaul of the UK's electricity transmission network in generations. Led by National Grid, the programme involves upgrading and expanding the high-voltage electricity network across England and Wales to transport increasing amounts of renewable energy, improve energy security and support the UK's transition to a low-carbon future.

The West Midlands to East Leicestershire (WEML) Enabling Works project is a key part of this programme, supporting the development of critical infrastructure required to strengthen the UK's electricity transmission network.

Currently in the pre-construction phase, the project team is supporting the client through the Development Consent Order (DCO) approval process, alongside planning, design development and commercial activities to prepare the works for delivery.

With construction planned to commence around 2031, this is a unique opportunity to join the project at the earliest stage of its lifecycle and play a key role in shaping its successful delivery from planning and approvals through to construction completion.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

As the project progresses into delivery, you'll support the implementation of engineering strategies, provide guidance to the wider engineering team and help ensure works are delivered to the highest standards of safety, quality and performance.

This role provides an exciting opportunity to be involved across the full project lifecycle, from early development and approvals through to construction and completion.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive approach with a commitment to delivering safe, high-quality and innovative engineering solutions.
