Who We Are

4C Strategies is a leading provider of organisational readiness and military training management solutions, serving clients in over 70 countries. Our flagship software, Exonaut, is widely adopted by NATO and allied forces for exercise planning, execution, and evaluation. Exonaut supports real-time exercise planning across military headquarters and agencies, facilitates staff and command briefings, and enables evidence-based decision-making. The platform's scalability allows for remote, real-time exercise planning, enhancing training efficiency and readiness. 4C Strategies' team of military consultants and software engineers collaborate globally with various armed forces, including those of the UK, US, Sweden, Australia, Canada, Norway, Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, and Finland, to develop and deliver tailored training and exercise management solutions.

Your Role

We’re looking for a Senior Engineer (Data Engineer) to design and build the data backbone of our 4C engineering work on a large, multi‑year MoD programme — one of the most significant training transformation efforts in UK defence today. You’ll help shape how training, exercise and partner data flows through Exonaut®: from ingest, through modelling and storage, out to the reports and integrations our customers actually use.

This is a Senior role with real ownership and real proximity to the work. You’ll independently lead substantial pieces of work end‑to‑end — designing pipelines, modelling data, choosing the right patterns for the job, and seeing them through to production. Around that, you’ll help shape how the wider team approaches data: the standards we hold ourselves to, the tools we reach for, and the way we test and observe what we build.

Day to day you’ll collaborate with other engineers, project managers and designers on the programme, with senior stakeholders on the customer side, and with peers across the wider 4C engineering organisation — where the IC track is treated as a first‑class career path alongside management.

What You’ll Do

Design, build and operate batch and streaming data pipelines that move training and exercise data between Exonaut, MoD systems and partner platforms — with reliability, observability and security treated as part of the design from day one. Lead data modelling and warehouse / lakehouse design decisions, balancing long‑term maintainability with the realities of a multi‑year delivery. Work primarily across the Microsoft / Azure data stack (SQL Server, Azure Data Factory, Synapse / Fabric, Power BI), and reach for tools like Python, dbt and Airflow where they fit the problem. Introduce event‑driven and CDC patterns (Kafka, Event Hubs and similar) where they help us keep data flowing in near‑real‑time across systems. Help raise our engineering standards around code quality, testing, observability and operability — with data treated as a first‑class engineering concern, not an afterthought. Mentor and coach engineers across the team — not just juniors — and help grow data engineering as a craft inside 4C. Partner with project managers and designers to make sure the data we build genuinely serves the people who use it.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

About You

A capable data engineer who has independently led substantial pieces of pipeline, modelling or platform work from design through to production, and who still likes being close to the code. Solid SQL and a working transformation language — Python is most common, and we’re flexible. Comfortable with version control, code review and writing tests for the data you produce. Comfortable across the Microsoft / Azure data stack (SQL Server, Data Factory, Synapse or Fabric, Power BI), and happy to pick up the parts you haven’t met yet. Sound judgement around data modelling and warehouse / lakehouse patterns, and a feel for when to reach for streaming or event‑driven approaches versus batch. Pragmatic about quality: you instrument what you build and care about how it runs at 2am as much as how it looks in code review. A thoughtful collaborator who works well with engineers, project managers, designers and senior customer stakeholders — including in regulated environments. A mentor by instinct who lifts the people around you and helps spread good practice. UK security clearance: if you already hold UK SC, that’s a plus. We’re equally happy to hear from candidates who are eligible for, and willing to undergo, SC clearance. A genuine interest in our mission — software that helps armed forces, public safety and resilience organisations train, prepare, and respond.
