Senior Design Engineer – Protection and Control
Location: Cambuslang Salary: £55,000 to £68,750 per annum (competitive package + benefits) Contract: Hybrid working
Closing Date: 12 July 2026
About the Role
Help us create a better future, quicker in this critical role. As a Senior Design Engineer – Protection and Control, you will develop and deliver engineering solutions for transmission networks (132kV and above) crucial to the UK’s Net Zero target.
You will provide basic and detailed engineering specifications, designs, technical support, and lifecycle management for Control & Protection Systems while ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, and operational requirements. Additionally, you will work with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Define protection and control requirements, and ancillary apparatus specifications, advising on construction programmes and outage planning where needed
- Develop basic and detailed engineering specifications and designs
- Assess technical tenders, review design drawings/specifications, and validate contracted solutions
- Ensure systems follow current legislation, policies, and operational compliance
- Provide technical support for Control & Protection across projects
- Prepare high-quality engineering documentation adhering to quality processes
- Assess training needs for new products and deliver technical, operational, and safety training packages
- Foster end-to-end integrated engineering solutions through collaboration with diverse teams
- Lead with health, safety, quality, and environmental compliance, promoting continuous improvement

Minimum Requirements
- Degree in an engineering discipline with relevant industrial experience
- CEng status (or pursuit of the qualification)
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, capable of forming effective multi-stakeholder relationships
- Commitment to applying and promoting CDM and safety best practices in design environments
- Technical acumen to investigate and evaluate substation plant and equipment specifications
- Proven experience in high-voltage projects (33kV+ to 400kV), demonstrating responsibility in design or engineering roles
Bonus qualities:
- Vast knowledge of substation plant operation, maintenance, and Commissioning
- Experience with legislative frameworks governing power systems and transmission networks
