About the job.

National Highways have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Lighting Engineer to join our team in the East region. The Senior Lighting Engineer will lead and coordinate the activities and resources involved in the identification of asset needs and development of early solutions for this asset class, whilst assuring adherence to defined asset policies and standards.

As a Senior Lighting Engineer, you would be leading on the development and management of our lighting asset. In the East we maintain 9,000 lighting columns, 3,000 lit signs and our own private cable network.

This role can be based from our Bedford, Cambridge or our Ipswich office.

Please note that you will be required to drive as part of your role, and you will need to have no more than 3 points to be considered for this position and during employment.

  • Lead the development of early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling and checking of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability, and costs.
  • Monitor the delivery of agreed early solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
  • Develop the technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractors for improvement and renewals work.
  • Ensure that asset data and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant database(s), in line with agreed standards and timescales.

About you.

  • Experience in Highways Lighting Asset management, inspection, assessment and design.
  • Degree or HND in relevant discipline or hold the Institute of Lighting Professionals Diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of lighting and electrical asset condition assessment, testing and analysis and degradation modelling
  • Working knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) standards and relevant British Standards, and their application to lighting asset maintenance on the highways network
  • Good knowledge of Construction Design Management 2015 (CDM) and associated duties.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
