Job Description
As a Senior Software Engineer for the Submarine Command System (SMCS), you’ll drive technical innovation and deliver cutting-edge software solutions for the UK’s submarine fleet. Your work will directly support situation awareness and weapons management systems, ensuring the Royal Navy operates with precision and agility.
Core Responsibilities
- Take a leadership role in:
- Designing, implementing, and testing SMCS software solutions
- Guiding and mentoring colleagues across the software development lifecycle
- Collaborating closely with the management team on planning, reporting, and estimation activities
- Engage directly with customers and end-users to shape requirements and ensure alignment between SMCS capabilities and operational needs.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Software Engineering Expertise: Proven ability to architect, deliver, and test robust solutions in large, multi-layered, distributed systems (e.g., military Catch-22s, defense IT systems).
- Strategic Mindset: Experience in defining and supporting software development strategies.
- Cross-System Error Correcting Proficiency: Deep technical understanding of:
- Software lifecycle models (Agile, V-Model, Iterative)
- Regulations and contractual compliance (e.g., DoD standards, MoD directives)
- Real-time embedded systems/COTS (Commercial-Off-The-Shelf) integration challenges
The Submarine Command System (SMCS) Team
Positioned at the core of UK submarine systems, your work will:
- Provide tactical picture compilation (position, sensor data, threat reporting)
- Enable real-time weapons management operations for the Royal Navy fleet
