Senior Engineer / Sub Agent
Senior Site Engineer / Sub Agent – Rail & Civil Engineering
Location: Cumbernauld | Projects: Edinburgh to Fife Corridor, Scotland
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Site Engineer or Sub Agent to join AmcoGiffen’s growing rail delivery team working on major Edinburgh to Fife Rail Enhancement Projects. This role requires strong setting out expertise, proven experience supporting and supervising rail construction in live operational environments.
The Role
Reporting to the Site Agent / Project Manager, the successful candidate will deliver day-to-day rail enhancement works, ensuring compliance with engineering control, safety, accuracy, and programme requirements. You’ll provide on-site leadership to engineers, supervisors, and subcontractors during multi-disciplinary projects, including:
- Trackside civils
- Structures
- Earthworks
- Platforms
- Associated enabling works
Key Responsibilities
Technical & Operational:
- Setting out and surveying for rail and civil engineering works
- Supervising/coordinating site activities, labour, plant, and subcontractors
- Ensuring compliance with HSE, environmental, safety, and quality standards
- Interpreting drawings, specifications, and construction information
- Maintaining accurate site records, diaries, and as-built documentation
Planning & Documentation:
- Assisting with short-term and weekly work planning
- Supporting production of:
- Risk Assessments
- Work Package Plans
- Inspection & Test Plans
- Task Briefings / Safe Work Packs
- Managing dimensional control and adherence to design tolerances

Coordination & Problem-Solving:
- Providing technical input to the Site Agent
- Supporting progress reporting
- Addressing on-site challenges through collaborative problem-solving
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience as a Site Engineer / Senior Site Engineer or Sub Agent within rail civil engineering projects
- Advanced setting out and surveying capability
- Experience supervising site activities and supporting site management
- Technical literacy in engineering drawings, specifications, and standards
- Working in live rail environments and enhancement programmes
- Ability to manage QA documentation, records, and reporting
Qualifications
- Degree / HNC/HND in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
- PTS (Personal Track Safety) mandatory
- SMSTS certificate (desirable for Sub Agent level)
