Senior Engineering Manager (Senior Chapter Lead)
This is a senior leadership role responsible for the overall health, capability, and effectiveness of engineering teams within their area of responsibility. The role replaces the traditional Chapter-led model with a more integrated approach, focusing on:
- Engineering strategy
- People leadership
- Capability development
- Delivery enablement
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Vision
- Define and own the engineering strategy within scope, aligned with broader technology and capability direction
- Set clear strategic priorities, standards, and expectations, guiding team operation and evolution
- Balance short-term delivery with long-term capability, sustainability, and risk management
- Take responsibility for engineering strategy effectiveness, adapting direction based on:
- Data
- Feedback
- Performance
- Contribute insights and learning to wider capability and technology discussions
Leadership & Delivery
- Hold leaders accountable for:
- Effective people leadership
- Clear ownership
- Sustained performance
- Partner with delivery and product leadership to ensure teams are:
- Appropriately supported
- Resourced
- Organised
- Focus on system-level health, identifying:
- Recurring organisational issues
- Resourcing challenges
- Ways of working impeding team progress
- Use outcome-focused metrics to improve:
- Consistency
- Predictability
- Team effectiveness
Cross-Functional Influence
- Act as a senior engineering leadership partner across:
- Delivery
- Product
- Architecture
- Technology
- Collaborate with Principal Engineers, ensuring support in:
- Technical decision-making
- Capability strategy
- Leadership
- Organisational structures
- Influence cross-functional decisions by providing perspective on:
- Capability
- Leadership capacity
- Risk
- Sustainability
- Represent engineering needs in:
- Planning
- Prioritisation
- Governance forums
- Serve as an escalation point for complex challenges unresolved at a team level, such as:
- People issues
- Capability concerns
- Organisational obstacles
