Senior Engineering Manager – Reliability and Operations
Team: Developer Experience Location: Hybrid (3 days Kings Cross office, 2 days remote) Contract: Permanent Salary: £112,000 per annum
About the Role
Join The Guardian and play a pivotal role in leading the Reliability and Operations team to build a revolutionary Developer Experience (DX) platform. This exciting initiative aims to:
- Strengthen observability and deployment capabilities
- Improve the efficiency of the Guardian’s engineering team
- Replace the existing platform within an agreed timeframe
You will:
- Guide a team of software developers in migrating legacy systems
- Foster a collaborative environment between DevOps, Observability, and AI/Automation teams
- Champion innovation by encouraging the responsible adoption of AI technologies to enhance productivity
- Upskill the team through mentorship and coaching
- Contribute to long-term DX strategy and improvements in product delivery
The team operates in a cloud-native (AWS) environment, with a codebase primarily written in Scala, but also leveraging TypeScript and Go where appropriate.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership & Development
- Support developers through 1:1 guidance, feedback, and career coaching
- Foster personal growth by acknowledging strengths and identifying areas for development
- Drive inclusive and effective teams
Technical & Operational Oversight
- Ensure seamless migration of services to the new Developer Experience platform
- Balance product delivery with technical maintenance
- Advocate for and implement best practices in reliability, observability, andägilm>

- Collaborate with Product & Engineering teams to ensure alignment with broader organisational goals
Strategic & Process Improvement
- Represent the team in engineering management discussions
- Improve recruitment, mentoring, and development practices across the department
- Influence long-term DX strategy and operational efficiency
Innovation & Emerging Technologies
- Lead initiatives in exploring AI for software development, weighing risks and opportunities
- Ensure ethical and responsible adoption of cutting-edge technologies
About You
Experience & Qualifications
- Experienced people manager with a commitment to team development, mentorship, and inclusive leadership
- Proven track record in DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering (SRE)
- Strong understanding of:
- Cloud-native architecture
- Modern DevOps tooling (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, incident management systems)
- AWS, Scalé, or other relevant languages (TypeScript, Go)
- Ability to drive reliability, observability, and efficiency improvements via tooling and best practices
- Passion for contributing to long-term Developer Experience strategy
