Senior Engineering Manager – Reliability and Operations
We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to join our Reliability and Operations team. Their goal is to build a new Developer Experience platform that enhances the efficiency of the Guardian’s engineering team by improving observability, deployment capabilities, and software development ease.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
- Guide a group of developers to decommission the existing platform and assist in identifying a migration strategy to achieve this within the agreed timeframe.
- Support the team in using AI technologies for software development, considering both risks and opportunities.
About the Team
The infrastructure lives in AWS, with most backend code written in Scala. The team also uses TypeScript and Go where appropriate. The Reliability and Operations team collaborates closely with the Security Team and AI and Automation Team as part of the Developer Experience Stream.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities
- Team Development & Support – Be the primary contact for developers, providing regular feedback, mentoring, and recognising their strengths.
- Technical Leadership – Demonstrate expertise in DevOps, migrations, and modern cloud-native architectures to guide technical decisions.
- Collaboration – Ensure seamless team coordination with the Product & Engineering department to transition services to the new Developer Experience platform.
- Work Priorisation – Balance product delivery and technical maintenance to keep the team effective.
- Engineering Management – Contribute to evolving practices in recruitment, mentoring, and development workflows.

About You
We are seeking a candidate with:
- People Management Experience – Strong background supporting line reports’ career development and fostering inclusive teams.
- DevOps & Platform Engineering Knowledge – Experience in cloud-native architecture, modern tooling, and site reliability engineering.
- Reliability & Observability Improvements – Demonstrated ability to enhance service reliability, maintenance, or observability using tooling and best practices.
- Strategic Contribution – Interest in shaping the long-term future of the Developer Experience stream.
- Tech Stack Alignment – Familiarity with AWS and at least one of our languages (TypeScript, Scala, Go).

Working Arrangements
A hybrid working model:
- 3 days per week in our Kings Cross office
- 2 days per week remotely
Salary: £112,000 per annum (including transparent remuneration policies).
