## The Role
Job Title
Senior Environmental Advisor
Reporting To
Project HSSEQ Manager
Location
United Kingdom (hybrid working with regular travel to project sites and operational locations)
Direct Reports
Environmental Advisors, Graduate Environmental Advisors, and Environmental Coordinators (where applicable)
## Role Purpose
The Senior Environmental Advisor provides professional environmental support to operational teams, ensuring compliance with:
- Environmental legislation
- Client requirements
- Company standards
Working across infrastructure, utilities, power transmission and distribution, telecommunications, and construction projects, this role includes:
- Supporting environmental objectives
- Maintaining ISO 14001 compliance
- Driving continual improvement
- Providing subject matter expertise in environmental risk management, sustainability, biodiversity, and environmental compliance
- Acting as a trusted advisor to project teams, clients, and stakeholders to manage environmental risks throughout the project lifecycle.
## Key Responsibilities
Environmental Compliance
- Provide competent environmental advice to operational and project teams.
- Ensure adherence to:
- Environmental Protection Act 1990
- Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981
- Water Resources Act 1991
- Environment Act 2021
- Environmental Permitting Regulations
- Waste Regulations & Duty of Care
- Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017
- Control of Pollution Act 1974
- Monitor compliance across assigned projects.
- Support investigations into environmental incidents, complaints, and non-conformances.
Project Support
- Support projects from tender through completion.
- Review and assist with:
- Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMPs)
- Environmental Risk Assessments
- Method Statements
- Waste Management Plans
- Pollution Prevention Plans
- Site Environmental Action Plans
- Attend project meetings and provide environmental guidance.
- Assist operational teams in implementing environmental controls.

Environmental Assurance
- Conduct environmental inspections, audits, and assurance reviews.
- Monitor performance against company standards.
- Verify implementation of environmental controls on-site.
- Identify improvements and support corrective actions.
- Produce detailed environmental inspection and audit reports.
Environmental Incident Management
- Investigate environmental incidents and near misses.
- Conduct root cause analysis and develop corrective/preventative actions.
- Track actions to completion.
- Identify trends and provide improvement recommendations.
- Support regulatory reporting.
Sustainability & Environmental Improvement
- Support sustainability initiatives and carbon reduction efforts.
- Promote waste minimisation, resource efficiency, and pollution prevention.
- Monitor Net Zero objectives.
- Support biodiversity enhancement initiatives.
- Encourage adoption of environmental best practices.
Biodiversity & Ecology
- Assist with Biodiversity Net Gain obligations.
- Liaise with ecological consultants.
- Monitor ecological mitigation measures.
- Support habitat protection and enhancement.
Environmental Management Systems
- Maintain ISO 14001 Environmental Management System.
- Assist with internal and external audits.
- Develop environmental procedures and standards.
- Ensure environmental records and documentation are up to date.
Training & Engagement
- Deliver environmental awareness training and briefings.
- Coach and mentor Environmental Advisors and operational teams.
- Promote shared learning.
- Participate in environmental initiatives.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Build relationships with:
- Clients
- Regulators
- Local Authorities
- Environmental Consultants
- Operational Teams
- Attend client meetings and environmental reviews.
- Support specific consultations within framework and tender submissions.
Key Accountabilities
- Ensuring environmental compliance across allocated projects.
- Effective delivery of environmental audits and inspections.
- Implementation of environmental management plans.
- Ensuring timely closure of environmental actions.
- Reducing environmental incidents.
- Supporting sustainability and biodiversity goals.

## Qualifications
Essential
- Degree, HND, or equivalent in:
- Environmental Management
- Environmental Science
- Sustainability
- Ecology
- Geography or a related discipline.
- IEMA Associate (AIEMA) or Practitioner (PIEMA) qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- IEMA Practitioner (PIEMA) or Member (MIEMA).
- ISO 14001 (Internal or Lead Auditor).
- Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or progressing towards.
- NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate.
- Biodiversity Net Gain training.
- Carbon Management qualification.
## Experience
Essential
- Experience within:
- Infrastructure, utilities, power, telecommunications, civil engineering, or construction sectors.
- Providing environmental advice on operational projects.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation.
- Expertise in:
- Environmental audits and inspections.
- Environmental management documentation.
- Environmental incident investigations.
Desirable
- Power Transmission and Distribution experience.
- Experience with National Grid or DNO frameworks.
- Telecommunications infrastructure knowledge.
- Ecological and biodiversity management.
- Sustainability and ESG reporting.
- ISO 14001 management system experience.
