Senior Environmental Chemist – Analytical Chemistry Team
Location: Harrogate Division: Environmental Risk Sciences (ERS)
Smithers is seeking a Senior Environmental Chemist to join its thriving Analytical Chemistry team in Harrogate. This role is ideal for an experienced scientist with expertise in pharmaceuticals, veterinary medicines, agrochemicals, and biocides who can lead complex method development while shaping the direction of a dynamic team.

The Role
Reporting to the Director of Chemistry, you will:
- Lead method development for complex analytical projects across GLP and non-GLP studies.
- Balance lab-based work with study direction and client engagement, combining technical expertise with regulatory compliance.
- Support environmental exposure, fate, and risk assessments of emerging contaminants.

Ideal candidates have strong analytical skills, scientific leadership ability, and experience working with regulators and clients.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, optimise, and validate analytical methods for molecules in environmental matrices (e.g., water, soil, air).
- Apply advanced techniques, with a focus on LC-MS/MS and GC-based methods.
- Act as GLP Study Director for assigned projects, ensuring compliance and quality.
- Provide technical and scientific expertise in study design, method strategy, and risk assessment.
- Support emerging contaminant research, interpreting data for regulatory reporting.
- Collaborate with clients to resolve challenges, improve study efficiency, and enhance technical approaches.
- Drive innovation and best practices within the analytical team.
- Assist in audits, inspections, and regulatory interactions.
Qualifications & Experience
Essential: ✔ BSc/MSc or PhD in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or Environmental Science. ✔ Proven expertise in method development within a regulated environment (e.g., pharmaceutical, CRO lab). ✔ Strong hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS and GC instrumentation. ✔ Familiarity with regulatory sectors (pharmaceuticals, veterinary medicines, agrochemicals, or biocides). ✔ Understanding of emerging environmental contaminants and their analytical challenges.

Desirable: ✔ GLP Study Director experience (or familiarity with study direction). ✔ Demonstrated regulatory and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail. ✔ Strong communication and client relationship management.
