Senior Equipment Engineer
Location: Southampton, onsite (hybrid working options considered upon discussion for part-time opportunities)
We’re looking for a Senior Equipment Engineer to join our onsite Equipment Engineering team in Southampton. This is a hands-on role focused on maintaining and repairing electronic, semiconductor, and high vacuum equipment to achieve 95% uptime across our facility.
With no typical "day-to-day" workflow, you’ll tackle a wide range of critical tasks, from calibration and fault diagnosis to reverse-engineering, designing bespoke test solutions, and collaborating on innovations.
The Opportunity
Your Role & Responsibilities
- Maintain, calibrate, repair, and troubleshoot electronic, mechanical, and vacuum systems to ensure operational reliability.
- Perform electrical/mechanical calibration, leak testing, and fault diagnosis across high-value precision equipment.
- Support the lifecycle management of complex equipment, including computer-controlled semiconductor systems and vintage logic-based solutions (reverse-engineering where necessary).
- Design, build, and document one-off bespoke test solutions—mixing electrical, electronic, mechanical, vacuum, pneumatic, or software components.
- Prepare technical documentation, including circuit diagrams, operator/maintenance manuals, and construction files.
- Contribute to cost estimation, budget approvals, and procurement processes.
- Mentor and coach less experienced engineers while managing your own workload independently or as part of the team.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
