About The Role
Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Estimator to join our Power Transmission & Distribution (T&D) business.
This UK-wide role focuses on the preparation of estimates for high-voltage substation projects across our client portfolio, supporting the successful delivery of major transmission and distribution infrastructure for National Grid, SSE and other key clients.
Working as part of our Work Winning team, you'll play a key role in developing robust and competitive estimates for complex power projects, collaborating with engineering, procurement, commercial and operational teams to support bids from initial opportunity through to contract award.
This position offers excellent flexibility, with the option to be based from any of our offices, including Derby, Leeds or Middlesbrough, operating on a hybrid basis with approximately two days per week in the office.
What you'll be doing
Strategic Estimating & Bid Support
- Develop pricing strategies in collaboration with the Estimating Manager.
- Attend and contribute to bid meetings including strategy sessions, kick-offs, site visits, risk workshops, and pricing reviews.
- Stay informed on emerging products, technologies, and market trends.
- Ensure all estimates comply with bid governance and Gate procedures.
- Prepare cost summaries, cashflows, and other financial documentation.
Technical & Commercial Alignment
- Understand and interpret technical and commercial project requirements.
- Prepare accurate, competitive estimates aligned with detailed programmes.
- Liaise with Pre-Construction Manager and internal teams (Design, Procurement, Operations, Commercial).
- Review Bills of Materials and ensure alignment with project scope and schedule.
- Evaluate and benchmark supplier and subcontractor quotations.

Risk & Opportunity Management
- Identify and cost project risks and opportunities.
- Lead internal pricing reviews and benchmark against similar projects.
- Support the handover process to commercial, operational, procurement, and finance teams for successful contract mobilisation.
- Engage with project teams to capture lessons learned and actual cost feedback.
Who we're looking for
Essential
- Proven experience in an estimating role within Power Transmission & Distribution, Substations, Utilities, Energy or major infrastructure projects.
- Strong understanding of the estimating process across large-scale engineering and construction projects.
- Experience interpreting technical drawings, specifications and project documentation.
- Understanding of commercial risk, opportunity and cost modelling.
- Strong analytical and financial skills with the ability to interrogate data and challenge assumptions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to travel to Balfour Beatty offices and project locations as required.
Desirable
- Familiarity with National Grid and/or SSE standards and specifications.
- HNC, HND or Degree qualification in Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management or a related discipline.
- 5-10 years' experience in a project estimating role.
- Experience estimating EPC, substation, transmission or power infrastructure projects.
- Knowledge of NEC contracts and utility frameworks.
- Experience using CANDY or similar estimating software.
