Senior Estimator
Senior Estimator – Northampton
We are one of the UK’s leading quantity surveying and estimating firms and are seeking a full-time estimator to work from our Northampton office.
About the Role
Quantity Surveying and Estimating firm based in Northampton, specialising in bills of quantities, take-offs, tendering, estimating and cost planning.
This role involves conducting take-offs, preparing bills of quantities, creating cost plans and submitting tenders for our client base, which includes contractors, sub-contractors, developers and private clients.
Successful Candidate Requirements
- Possible Professional Quantity Surveyor (PQS) background
- Possible experience in a main contractor environment
- At least 5 years’ experience in a similar estimating role
- Explicit experience in taking off and pricing residential projects
- Experience in residential new-build take-offs
- Experience in residential new-build estimating
- Fluent in SMM7 (Standard Method of Measurement) and NRM3 (New Rules of Measurement) – plus familiarity with major forms of measurement methods
- Conversant in all major forms of contract, particularly JCT (Joint Contracts Tribunal) contracts
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
- Experience using other forms of taking-off and estimating software
- A team player, well-suited to grow alongside a growing estimating firm

Job Role & Responsibilities
- Set up and manage estimating files upon receipt of enquiries, both electronic and paper, while updating records and supplementary documentation as required.
- Oversee the estimating department, including liaising with new and existing clients.
- Authorise and cross-check the work of junior/assistant estimators prior to submission.
- Interface extensively with all supply chain members, from suppliers and subcontractors, across all phases of tendering—from enquiry submission to contract award.
- Chase supplier, subcontractor and manufacturer quotes to obtain pricing data.
- Maintain a quotation register per contract for administrative tracking purposes.
- Complete estimating tasks and engage in answering queries related to established estimates.
- Fulfill additional general support and administrative duties as needed from time to time.
- Provide support and assistance to colleagues during peak workload periods.
What We Are Looking For
Key Competencies & Attributes
- Strong understanding of the building industry and its processes
- Highly organised, with planning and prioritisation skills
- Analytical and accurate with meticulous attention to detail
- Excellent communicator, capable of building and maintaining strong working relationships
- Key stakeholders to include colleagues, clients and industry supply chain members
- Highly computer literate (particularly with Microsoft Office tools)
- Ability to work under pressure with a fast-paced environment
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience as an Estimator
- Experience working with comparable consultancies or estimating firms
- Relevant estimating qualifications would be advantageous
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with efficiency and coordination
- Negotiation skills to handle challenges effectively in a high-pressure, fast-moving industry
