Senior Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine

Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is offering an exciting opportunity to join the team for a fixed-term training role as a Senior Fellow in Intensive Care Medicine, starting 5th August 2026 and ending 3rd August 2027.

  • Purpose: Structured training, clinical supervision, and specialised education aligned to the Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) training curriculum
  • Key Emphasis: Learning, development, and mentorship—while contributing to service delivery

About the Role

This critical care position at ST3 level or above is ideal for doctors seeking advanced training, leadership experience, and development under a defined educational framework.

As a Senior Fellow, you will:

  • Provide first-class clinical care to complex adult patients
  • Support the middle-grade leadership of ICM teams with decision-making and mentorship
  • Hold a named educational supervisor with full support for Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  • Develop expertise in advanced airway management, vasopressors, and ventilatory support while contributing to service improvement and education

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care & Direct Patient Responsibilities

  • Assess and admit critically ill adult patients to ICU, stabilise them, and formulate an initial clinical plan (including ventilation, vaospressors, renal support, and airway management)
  • Perform arterial and central venous line insertions as part of advanced critical care skills
  • Review and plan daily patient progress in collaboration with consultants, organising investigations and presenting findings
  • Support the Critical Care Outreach Team by reviewing and recommending action for unwell patients outside ICU as directed

Training & Education

  • Lead or co-lead undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes for junior doctors and allied health professionals (e.g., nurses, paramedics)
  • Develop and deliver education initiatives, incorporating both hands-on training (e.g., simulations, workshops) and theoretical curriculum delivery
  • Mentor junior trainees on the register/airway rota at ST3+ level
  • Promote Equality & Diversity in teaching and team dynamics

Management & Collaboration

  • Support service delivery while upholding trust policies on procedures, ethics, and safety protocols
  • Demonstrate flexibility and initiative in fast-paced critical care environments
  • Work collaboratively with the consultant workforce, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary teams

Selection Criteria: Essential & Desirable Qualifications

Education & Licensure

✔ MBBS / equivalent medical qualification ✔ General Medical Council (GMC) registration with a licence to practise ✔ Core Training completed in a relevant field (e.g., Intensive Care Medicine (ICM) or Anaesthesia) ✔ Minimum 2 years NHS experience (or equivalent)

Qualifications (Desirable)

⊕ MRCP, FRCS, MCEM, or specialist certification (FRCP, FRCA funded EU equivalent) ⊕ Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or ACLS certification ⊕ Qualification in Medical Education

Technical Skills

✔ Competent in advanced airway skills (difficult intubation, Crisis Resource Management) ✔ Basic IT proficiency and daily use of electronic documentation systems

Soft Skills & Attributes

✔ Exceptional multidisciplinary teamwork (clinical, teaching, and service delivery) ✔ Understanding of Equality & Diversity principles, impacting service user, staff, and visitor experiences ✔ Strong communication skills (verbal and written English) for patient families and care teams ✔ Ability to prioritise effectively, work under pressure, and respond calm yet efficiently to acute scenarios

Desirable Soft Skills

⊕ Professional and hands-on research experience ⊕ Enthusiasm for Simulation Under Stress Integrated Course (FUSIC), or willingness to participate ⊕ Experience in audit and quality improvement

Salary & Contract Terms

Remuneration

  • Basic Salary Post: Nodal Point 5 (fixed on 6/12-month contractual increments)
  • Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must meet Minimum of 6 years’ specialty training + Relevant higher-exam pass (e.g., FRCP, FRCA) + National curriculum compliance (e.g., GMCportfolio for training).

    • Band 7 nodal pay arrangement (updated via NHS Medical Pay Circular):
