Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic person to work in our busy tertiary level Neonatal Intensive Care team. Candidates must have a minimum of 5 years clinical experience post medical school graduation and a minimum of 18 months tertiary (NICU) neonatal experience within the UK, to include the management of extremely preterm infants and those with surgical and cardiac differences.
The proposed start date is August 2026.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Candidates will participate in the middle grade medical rota (registrar ST4+ or equivalent) on the neonatal unit to include shifts on intensive care, high dependency, special care and conducting neonatal follow up clinics.
We also hope candidates will have prior experience in neonatal transport and will therefore work with the SONeT Transport team (Transport nurse +/- Transport consultant).
Additional duties include supporting junior colleagues on the postnatal ward and with community reviews.
Necessary procedural skills include peripheral cannulation, central (umbilical and long line) and arterial lines, tracheal intubation, lumbar puncture and chest drain insertion.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- GMC registration with a licence to practise
- MRCPCH or equivalent
- At the time of starting the post, applicants should be a fully qualified doctor with a minimum of 5 years’ experience post-graduation.
- Applicants should have a minimum of 18 months experience working in a tertiary level 3 neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in the UK at registrar level
- NLS (& APLS) provider or equivalent
- Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
- Registrar level neonatal transport experience
- Experience managing extremely preterm infants >22 weeks gestation
- Experience using high frequency oscillatory ventilation (HFOV), inhaled nitric oxide and therapeutic hypothermia/cerebral function monitoring

Desirable criteria
- MSC/BSc (or other intercalated degree)
- Interest or experience in research
Aptitudes and skills
Essential criteria
- Competent IT skills and familiarity with NHS systems
- Proven ability to manage acute neonatal emergencies
- Competence in practical procedures (to include neonatal venepuncture, cannulation, umbilical and long line insertion, lumbar puncture, intubation – term/preterm and chest drain insertion)
- Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi-professional teams
- Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
- Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English)
Desirable criteria
- NLS instructor
- ARNI provider or equivalent
- Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching including other members of the MDT
- Undertaken an audit or quality improvement project relevant to neonatal medicine
