Job Description

Our Water team is looking for a passionate Senior Flood Modeller to contribute to ambitious, high-profile projects across the UK and beyond—rooted in our dynamic northern engineering hub in Leeds.
About the Role
This senior technical leader will mentor junior staff while boosting AECOM’s expertise for local authorities, water companies, and private/public sector clients.
Key Responsibilities
As a Senior Flood Modeller, you’ll take ownership of critical flood risk projects while guiding others. Your work will include:

Hydraulic Modelling & Flood Risk Assessments
- Developing and validating hydraulic models using software like:
- Flood Modeller, TUFLOW, MIKE 11, MIKE 21, HEC-RAS, ICM
- Supporting Flood Alleviation Scheme design, flood risk assessments, and reservoir flood modelling
- Developing and validating hydraulic models using software like:

Water Quality Modelling
- Building and refining physico-chemical, biological, and bacterial/chemical water quality models using tools like:
- MIKE, Delft3D, SIMCAT, ICM
- Ensuring models meet Environment Agency requirements

Hydrological Assessments
- Managing and verifying hydrological studies (including Flood Estimation Handbook, ReFH2, WINFAP)

Tendering & Client Engagement
- Leading bids for innovative projects to multimillion-pound frameworks
- Building strong client relationships and cross-disciplinary collaboration
- Keeping abreast of legislative updates

Team Mentorship & Project Delivery
- Training junior colleagues and fostering professional growth
- Using AECOM’s project management systems to meet deadlines and budgets
- Collaborating with engineers and technical specialists
Requirements
Expertise & Experience
We’re seeking a self-starter with:
- Proven expertise in hydraulic and water quality modelling software (e.g., Mike, ICM, SIMCAT).
- In-depth knowledge of Environment Agency flood risk assessment standards.
- Basic understanding of water quality regulatory frameworks (freshwater standards).
- Python/Anaconda/Ruby scripting experience (advantageous).
- A commitment to continuous learning in a dynamic, deadline-focused environment.
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Professional qualification (or near-completion) with CIWEM or equivalent.
Soft Skills
- Strong communication—both in writing and verbally.
- Autonomy and initiative—ability to work independently while thriving in a team.
- Client-focused mindset—with a drive to deliver results.
