About the Role

AECOM’s Water team seeks a Senior Flood Modeller to lead high-profile flood risk projects and elevate our Water Business Line. As part of our nearly 50,000-strong global team of planners, engineers, and scientists, you’ll:

  • Influence major flood risk solutions across local authorities, water companies, and public/private clients.
  • Mentor junior staff while expanding AECOM’s technical capabilities.
  • Deliver decisive impact: Work at the intersection of modern infrastructure and community resilience.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Expertise

  • Develop, validate, and manage hydraulic models using industry-leading software, including:

    • Flood Modeller / TUFLOW (for Flood Alleviation Schemes)
    • MIKE 11 / 21 (fluvial and coastal processes)
    • HEC-RAS (architectural-scale studies)
    • ICM / Flood EASY, PEARL-WSys (for reservoir assessments)
  • Construct and refine water quality models (physico-chemical, ecological, bacterial/chemical) for regulatory compliance, employing tools like Delft3D, MIKE, or SIMCAT.

  • Perform hydrological assessments using:

    • Flood Estimation Handbook (FEH) up-date
    • DWAF Proceedings manuals (for international projects)
    • Regulator-approved methodologies (UK/EU standards)

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Proactively contribute to proposal writing, from innovative one-off projects to multimillion-pound frameworks.
  • Onboard staff, sharing expertise and fostering professional growth.
  • Engage deeply with clients, bridging technical concepts for smoother project delivery.
  • Keep pace with evolving regulations (e.g., RSAs, Urban Flooding Framework).

Execution & Client Delivery

  • Ensure deliverables meet client standards and AECOM’s quality assurance protocols.
  • Collaborate closely with geophysicists, hydrologists, and design teams to deliver flood resilience solutions.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven expertise in flood modelling (5+ years) with a focus on hydraulics and hydrology.
  • Sound working knowledge of UK Environmental Agency (Flood Estimation Handbook, RES, RaF) standards.
  • Basic understanding of water quality (physico-chemical/biological processes) and regulatory standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate scripting skills (e.g., Python, R, or Bash) for validation or script tasks.

Degrees & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or a relevant environmental/technical field, such as:
    • Hydraulics, Water Resources, Civil Hydrology
  • Professional qualification (or working towards it) with CIWEM, ICE, or similar.

  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement (written & verbal).
  • Proactivity and self-motivation to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
