Job Title: Senior Front-End Design Engineer
Start Date: ASAP
Location: Remote, UK based
Duration: Approximately 6–8 weeks (25–35 days)
Summary
We're looking for an experienced Front-End Design Engineer to refine and elevate the user experience of an established headless ecommerce platform.
This is not a greenfield build or full redesign. The platform is live and functioning, but the customer-facing experience needs a significant uplift in visual quality, consistency and usability.
You'll combine strong design judgement with hands-on implementation, improving existing UI patterns, refining reusable components, and delivering polished production-ready code within an established React application.
Working closely with an existing engineering team, you'll own the visual execution of key ecommerce journeys while ensuring components remain maintainable, performant and scalable.
Contract Details
An initial paid milestone will be used to validate technical and design fit before the remaining project scope is confirmed.
About the Project
The business operates a mature ecommerce platform with a large catalogue, international customers and an existing React-based frontend.
The platform has recently undergone significant development, but now requires a dedicated specialist to improve the customer-facing experience through thoughtful UI refinement and high-quality frontend implementation.

Existing design files are available but should be treated as a foundation rather than a fixed specification. We are looking for someone who can make informed design decisions rather than simply implementing screens pixel-for-pixel.
The Role
You will review the current storefront, identify opportunities for improvement, refine the visual language and implement those improvements directly in the frontend application.
This is a hands-on role requiring both strong UI design instincts and excellent frontend engineering skills.
The focus is on creating a polished, commercially credible ecommerce experience rather than producing documentation or theoretical design work.
Required Skills
Essential
- Expert React and Next.js development experience
- Strong TypeScript skills
- Advanced Tailwind CSS knowledge
- Proven experience building modern ecommerce frontends
- Excellent UI and visual design judgement
- Strong understanding of typography, spacing, hierarchy and responsive layouts
- Experience creating reusable component libraries or design systems
- Experience implementing production-ready frontend code
- Strong knowledge of accessibility and responsive design best practices
- Ability to work collaboratively within an existing engineering team

Desirable
- Experience with headless ecommerce architectures
- Experience with visual regression testing
- Familiarity with Storybook or component documentation
- Experience working with large ecommerce catalogues
- Knowledge of Core Web Vitals and frontend performance optimisation
- Experience within retail, fashion or consumer ecommerce
Key Responsibilities
- Review the existing storefront and identify opportunities for improvement
- Refine the visual language across key customer journeys
- Create a lightweight, maintainable component system
- Improve consistency across typography, spacing, forms, buttons and interactive elements
- Enhance mobile usability and responsive behaviour
- Implement reusable frontend components using React and Tailwind CSS
- Collaborate with engineers responsible for backend integrations
- Ensure production-quality implementation and visual consistency
- Contribute to frontend quality assurance and visual regression processes
