Senior Frontend Developer

Contract: 12-Month Fixed-Term Contract or Permanent

Location: Remote (UK-based) - ad hoc travel to Newcastle

Clearance: Must be eligible for BPSS

About the Role

Amber Labs is looking for an experienced Senior Frontend Developer to join a high-performing team delivering modern digital services within a UK Central Government environment. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working on large-scale, complex systems and is passionate about building performant, accessible, and user-focused web applications using modern frontend technologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain responsive, high-quality frontend applications
  • Build modern user interfaces using JavaScript frameworks and templating tools
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including backend developers, designers, and stakeholders
  • Ensure code quality through best practices, testing, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Contribute to technical design decisions and frontend architecture
  • Mentor junior developers and promote engineering best practices

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Strong experience with HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (ES6+), Node.js
  • Proven experience with modern frontend frameworks/libraries such as ReactJS
  • Templating frameworks such as Nunjucks or Freemarker
  • Bootstrap, LESS, SASS
  • Experience working with CI/CD and development tools Git, GitLab CI, Jenkins, SonarQube
  • Experience integrating with backend services and APIs
  • Previous experience working within UK Central Government environments
  • Strong understanding of accessibility and performance best practices

Desirable Skills

  • Experience working with Java-based backend systems (e.g., Java 11, Spring Boot)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS
