Full-Stack Software Engineer – UK Biobank’s Automated Output Checking System
At UK Biobank, we’re pioneering new technologies to advance biomedical research securely. Our AI-powered, cloud-native automated output checking system for trusted research environments is reshaping how researchers interact with sensitive datasets.
This is your chance to lead development for a first-of-its-kind platform—where AI, cloud excellence, and modern full-stack engineering converge under your guidance.
About the Role
Working with architects, researchers, vendors, and engineering teams, you’ll shape a global-scale platform supporting the safe and secure export of research outputs. Your contributions reshape data security, scalability, and developer experience in computational health research.
This is more than engineering—it’s about innovating cloud-native security solutions for global health impact.
Responsibilities
You will design, build, and deploy systems that embed trust at every level:
- Ensure integration patterns align with enterprise architecture principles—event-driven, API-first, and microservices-based.
- Develop scalable, secure, and maintainable full-stack applications using:
- Backend: Python (FastAPI, Flask) and relational and non-relational databases.
- Frontend: TypeScript + modern frameworks (React).
- Infrastructure: AWS (Lambda, ECS/EKS, S3, API Gateway, IAM, Step Functions) + Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform).
- Build and manage responsible, observable, and monitored systems with:
- Comprehensive logging, monitoring, and audit trails.
- Dynamic CI/CD pipelines for smooth workflows.
- Engage with cross-functional teams to refine architecture, collaborate with data stewards, and explain technical trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

- Frontend mastery: TypeScript + React/Vue.
- AWS proficiency:
- Containers (ECS/EKS)
- Event-driven architectures (SQS, Step Functions, Lambda)
- Security and networking (IAM, VPC, API Gateway)
- Microservices/digital soup knowledge (“I can graph this” vibes).
- Hands-on API design and security (OpenAPI/Swagger, JWT/OAuth).
- CI/CD obsession: DevOps, automation, and Sakawa’s eternal friends (*GitHub Actions, Jenkins, ouija boards—though none of those last).
