Joining dunnhumby means you’ll be part of a pioneering initiative to embed a new continuous-deployment platform. As the first product engineer on this journey, you’ll architect and build an end-to-end customer-facing analytics product, setting a production-ready standard for the rest of the engineering team.


What We Expect from You

You are a senior-level engineer driven by operational excellence and an eagerness to push boundaries. We’re looking for expertise in:

  • Backend & Frontend: Senior-level experience building and running production services in:
    • C# / ASP.NET Core
    • TypeScript / Next.js / React
    • A strong working knowledge of both stacks, with an appetite to grow deeper.
  • Kubernetes Mastery:
    • Hands-on ownership of services: deployments, probe management, autoscaling, NetworkPolicies, RBAC, and debugging in-production failures via kubectl.
    • Proficiency with Kubernetes operators and CRDs: understanding reconciliation loops, custom resources, and operator-driven infrastructure’s advantages.
  • Cloud Platforms:
    • Hands-on experience with at least one of:
      • GCP (GKE, Cloud SQL, Pub/Sub, Secret Manager)
      • Azure (AKS, Azure DB for PostgreSQL, Key Vault)
    • Willingness to adopt the other platform.
  • Engineering Collaboration:
    • Clear, structured communication: RFCs, ADRs, runbooks, and PR descriptions that actionable for peers.

Nice-to-Have

We’re also excited to see experience in:

  • Crossplane: Authoring Compositions, CompositeResourceDefinitions, or custom providers.
  • GitOps: Fluency with ArgoCD and Helm, and CI/CD authorship in GitLab.
  • Custom Kubernetes Operators: Built with the Operator SDK or Kubebuilder.
  • Service Mesh: Experience with Istio or Linkerd.
  • Platform/DevOps:
    • Migrating products from bundled releases to continuous deployment.
    • Contributions to Backstage or an internal developer portal.
  • AI-Augmentation: Effective use of AI tools in day-to-day development (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude).

Responsibilities

As a core member of our team, you’ll:

  • Define Vision: Shape clear, testable acceptance criteria collaboratively with Product and Design.
  • End-to-End Ownership:
    • Architect, build, deploy, and maintain products across .NET services, TypeScript frontends, PostgreSQL, and GitOps.
  • Scalability & Design:
    • Develop scalable backend systems (RESTful APIs, event handling) with deep clean architecture principles.
    • Craft high-quality frontend experiences with accessible components, robust data/state management.
  • Infrastructure as Code:
    • Design cloud-native, declarative infrastructure using Kubernetes, Crossplane, CRDs.
  • Security & Quality:
    • Uphold impeccable security standards across backend and frontend.
    • Maintain rigorous testing (unit, integration, contract) and code quality.
  • Observability & Reliability:
    • Deliver meaningful observability (tracing, logging, SLO-focused monitoring) with real-user impact in mind.
  • Cost Efficiency: Balance scalability and resource optimization awareness.
  • Incident Response: Participate in the on-call rotation after ramp-up.
  • AI Integration: Put AI-assisted tools (Copilot, Claude) into practical daily use.
