I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The Role
We are looking for candidates who are self-driven with a positive outlook and excellent understanding of archaeological geophysics and British archaeology. The Senior Geophysicist role provides regular rotation between running geophysical surveys in the field and the office-based production of project documentation, reports, research and analysis. For surveys in the field, you will be responsible for day-to-day running of sites of all sizes including delivery of on-site activities, undertaking data collection, recording, quality control, SHEQ, on-site point of contact for client, archaeological advisor, and other stakeholders. You will have experience and knowledge of a range of techniques (magnetometer, electromagnetic, earth resistance, GPR) and be able to assist managers in supporting field and reporting teams on projects beyond those you are directly responsible for.
As part of the geophysical survey team you will get involved in several large and exciting projects across the UK and EU. We have many large-scale infrastructure projects throughout 2026, which include landscape wide 1000+ha sites and linear schemes. Working away and travelling in new places is a normal part of this role.
In Headland we are proud of our people. We will support you to meet your goals and train you in specific archaeological and other skills to feel confident and succeed in your role.
