About the Role

AECOM’s UK & Ireland Ground Engineering Practice has a Senior Geotechnical Engineer / Senior Engineering Geologist vacancy in the Belfast office, available on a full- or part-time basis.
Our Ground Engineering Practice serves a diverse range of industries, including:
- Energy
- Water
- Defence
- Highway and rail sectors
The role covers all phases of ground engineering, from feasibility and desk studies, ground investigation, detailed design, contract administration, technical advisory, to construction supervision. We work with UK, Irish, and international clients, delivering projects of all scales across multiple sectors.

What You’ll Do
You’ll play a key leadership role, with responsibilities including:

Project Leadership:
-
Deliver geotechnical projects from concept to completion, ensuring technical quality, adherence to budget, and on-time delivery.

Manage geotechnical input for large-scale infrastructure projects, such as:
- Coolree Reservoir
- N21 Adare Bypass
- Royal Victoria Hospital
- Santry Wastewater Treatment Plant
- Poolbeg West Wastewater Treatment Plant

Support UKwide and international projects under frameworks for:
- Department for Infrastructure (DfI)
- Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII)
- Northern Ireland Water
- Uisce Éireann

Technical Delivery:
- Prepare, review, and approve geotechnical documents, including:
- Desk studies
- Interpretative reports
- Technical specifications
- Construction drawings
- Design reports

Provide expert technical input in client and team review meetings, championing alternative design solutions where needed.

Author bid proposals for internal and external clients.

Team Development & Mentorship:
- Establish and maintain a culture of learn-and-grow, offering guidance to junior team members.
- Support skill development to help achieve Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Chartered Geologist (CGeol) status where applicable.
Your Qualifications & Experience
Here’s what we’re looking for:

Education:
- BEng/MEng in Civil Engineering
- BSc/MSc in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Earth Science
- Preferred: MSc in Geotechnical Engineering or Engineering Geology
- Chartered Engineer (IEng/CEng) or Geologist (CGeol) status is highly desirable (on track to achieve with support).

Technical & Practise Expertise:
-
Deep knowledge of UK and Irish ground conditions and ground investigation methods.

Strong understanding of geotechnical design, including:
- Earthworks
- Foundations
- Retaining structures
- Slope stabilisation
-
Confident use of design software (e.g., Slope/W, Wallap).
-
Experience with data management tools (e.g., OpenGround) is advantageous.

Standards & Regulations:
- In-depth knowledge of relevant Eurocodes, British and Irish Standards, as well as CDM Regulations and Safety in Design.

Interdisciplinary Experience:
- Experience with highways, rail, and water-related projects is a plus.

Commercial & Client Facing Skills:
- Ability to manage commercial responsibilities (budgeting, programming, and relationship building).
- Strong written and verbal communication for concise reporting and presentations.
