Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Senior Geotechnical Engineer – HS2 Ltd
Location: Birmingham
Salary: Base salary: £54,878pa to c.£64,562pa, depending on skills and experience. In addition, a 20% flexible benefits fund (paid on top of base salary and fully pensionable) and a range of competitive benefits.

As the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will work closely with the Head of Ground Engineering and Lead Geotechnical Engineer to deliver technical leadership across the HS2 programme. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining technical standards and specifications for geotechnical engineering disciplines.
- Providing specialist technical advice across HS2 Ltd’s operations, including responding to Requests for Information (RFIs), technical questions (TQs), and adjustments (Departures).
- Supporting delivery teams to ensure compliance with Civil Engineering standards and geotechnical integrity.
- Collaborating with Main Works Civil Contracts Integral Project Teams (MWCC IPTs) and other contracts (e.g., civil, depots, stations, rail operations).
- Assessing residual ground movements and managing handover processes for earthworks.
- Enhancing infrastructure maintenance and management for geotechnical assets, in alignment with Operations & Maintenance teams.
- Advising on ground risk and compensation events related to construction conditions.
Additionally, you will promote innovation and best practice, ensuring consistent, efficient approaches across the entire HS2 project.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Integration:
- Work with the Lead Geotechnical Engineer to maintain consistency in geotechnical standards and engineering excellence.
- Act as a Subject Matter Expert, providing technical authority to all HS2 business units, including HS2 Ltd and supply chain partners.
- Support safety-critical decision-making and compliance with HS2’s Safe at Heart principles.

Technical & Commercial Liaison:
- Review ground risk for potential compensation events arising from contract clauses (e.g., NEC3).
- Deliver impact assessments on proposed changes to geotechnical standards.
- Coordinate specialist engineering consultancy input, working with HS2’s procurements and financial teams.

- Implement new and fit-for-purpose technologies, techniques, and processes to enhance safety, efficiency, and quality.

- In-depth knowledge of civil engineering design principles and geotechnical processes.

- Strong abilities in communication, both technical and leadership-focused, to complex teams.
- Versatile, adaptable, and capable of applying geotechnical standards in real-world scenarios.
Key Experience Requirements
- Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or Geology (or equivalent profession accreditation), preferably outstanding.
- Minimum five years’ full-time experience in large-scale infrastructure construction.
- Strong understanding of contract principles (NEC3), procurement, risk management, and commercial issues.
- Knowledge of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) policies and principles, with a propensity to embed them in technical solutions.
