About the Role
We are seeking a **bold, independent, and experienced Senior Geotechnical Design Engineer & Assignment Manager to:
- Lead and execute assignments globally, ensuring high-quality outputs and client satisfaction.
- Act as a technical and operational leader, driving design, commercial, budgetary and project delivery activities.
- Maximise margin growth, support staff development, and mentor upcoming engineers.
- Foster cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration while driving continuous improvement.
This is an opportunity to contribute to major infrastructure projects while guiding the next generation of engineers.
Key Responsibilities
The role requires a self-motivated, highly skilled professional to:
Technical and Design Leadership
- Design and oversee complex geotechnical solutions on international projects, using Eurocodes, industry standards, and best-practice methodologies.
- Direct assessments, calculation models, and programme compliance, ensuring assignments meet project deadlines, budgets, and technical desired outcomes.
- Lead and contribute to geotechnical risk assessment, monitoring, and advisory services (e.g., Instrumentation and Soil Mechanics).
- Foster consistency through reliable peer review and standardisation of deliverables.
- Utilise advanced geotechnical and numerical modelling software (e.g., PLAXIS, Z-soil, Repute, WALLAP, GINT) and CAD/CAPP tools for design consistency and analysis.

Assignment and Project Delivery
- Manage assignments from inception to sign-off, coordinating across disciplines (e.g., Civil, Structural, Environmental) and applies tradecraft matching seniority.
- Develop and adhere to commercial plans, forecasting and budgeting, ensuring profitability whilst delivering value for money.
- Provide effective procurement support for global works, assisting contract planning and tender management.
- Resolve technical issues, providing guidance and resolving programme risks efficiently.
People Development and Relationship Management
- Nurture a collaborative environment, mentoring technical staff, graduates, chartered engineers, project managers, and graduates through technical existential risks such as chartership.
- Maintain strong client relationships, advocating work relevance alignment and professional support.
- Engage in recruitment, training, appraisal, and development processes, ensuring team capability is aligned with project demands.
- Promote a positive, safe, and inclusive workplace culture, adhering to Rendel’s Health, Safety, and Environment policies.
Business Growth and Expansion
- Assist Market Sector Leaders to identify and secure business opportunities, preparing quotations and tenders, and winning projects worldwide.
- Bring opportunities to support growth in UK and overseas markets (especially key areas such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East, Asia-Pacific).
Organisational Engagement
- Embrace and drive proposals and emergence of change, influencing behavior and processes to improve company performance.
- Represent Rendel in consultation with clients, regulators, and industry bodies to raise the value of our offerings.
Supporting Activities

Requirements
We seek a cognisant, outcome and people-driven engineer with:
Technical Expertise and Qualifications
- Chartered engineer (or near-charactred) membership, preferably ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) or IEMA.
- Minimum qualification: A Civil Engineering degree with a postgraduate qualification in a relevant geotechnical or engineering geology discipline.
- At least 10 years of hands-on (3-5 years’ progression from start as starting ground up) experience as a geotechnical designer, covering:
- Foundations (deep and shallow, including site) & Settlement (New Castle Core assessment, Later peactment-Rate and Extreme).
- Retaining and temporary structures, Bulging/Lateral impact forces, Excavation and basement design.
- Earthworks, soil & rock slope engineering.
- Ground improvement methods, Earth dam designs, and associated standards.
- Tunnelling and cutter design parameters (supervision and standards, seismicity and liquefaction evaluation, and instrumentation monitoring).
- Eurocode and national/international standards knowledge, including BS 8002, UK NA, Euro 13:2006, etc.
- Experience leading multi-author teams in delivering high-cost (£100m+) complex construction projects.

- In Business Development:
- Serve as a Relationship Architect, maintaining client and contractor partnerships, leading stakeholder goodwill.

- Technical standpoints towards sophisticated Geotechnical design include translating data into optimal solutions.
- Strong communication skills, globally capable in written, verbal, presenting.

- Chemistry with international clients and cross-cultural corporate teamwork.
- Project Management competency, including benchmarking relevant protocols.
Technical Tools and Software
- Proficient in Excel, Microsoft C++ Derivative (or editable via macro) and Office. Capable of Dashboard coalignment and management alerts.
- User of geotechnical toolkits, particularly PLAXIS 3D/VOBU, Z-SOIL, Repute, Sflat Line CAD (2D/3D), Scope or GEOTEK) Intermediate in complex 2D and 3D analysis.
Additional Attributes
- First-hand overseas site experience, essential for consulting on remote locations.
- Preferred French or Spanish fluency.
- Experience in geomorphic, coastal, and maritime geotechnical challenges.
