Senior Design Engineer – Apprised Engineering (London Office)
Murphy is recruiting for a Senior Design Engineer to work within our Applied Engineering division from our London office.
About the Role
Murphy is currently recruiting for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join our award-winning team. Our team is known for its extensive in-house expertise and continual drive to innovate within the industry.
The Senior Design Engineer will:
- Provide safe, practical, and economic designs for internal clients to a high standard of professional competence.
- Ensure compliance with Company procedures.
Murphy Applied Engineering is a multidisciplinary function, implementing the "Better Engineered" strategic driver to achieve smart, safe, and constructible solutions within tight project timeframes.

A Day in the Life of a Murphy Senior Engineer
- Technical design delivery – Drawings, design reports, and constructability assessments for:
- Steel transmission pipelines
- Plastic ducts for HV cables
- Pre-FEED & FEED studies for pipeline/HV power cable infrastructure projects in the UK
- Risk assessments and design compliance checks
- Project coordination including site visits and workload management
- Bid support – Technical input into tender submissions, design estimating
- Trenchless Crossing Designs – HDD’s, Microtunnels & Auger Bores
- Mentorship – Coaching and professional development for team members

Key Responsibilities
✔ Detailed technical leadership for linear infrastructure projects ✔ Consent processes expert support (rail, road, waterway crossings) ✔ Alignment with UK net zero targets (2050 targets) ✔ Technical collaboration with estimators, planners, and external stakeholders
Requirements &Experience
Education & Professional Qualifications
- Degree qualified in Mechanical or Civil Engineering
- Chartered Engineer (or working toward Chartership) at a UK Engineering Council-regulated institution
Industry Knowledge & Standards
- National Gas transmission pipeline standards: PD8010, BSEN 14161, BS EN 1594, etc.
- Plastic pipe design compliance (UK & international)
- Linear infrastructure projects experience (pipelines, ducts)
- Trenchless technology (HDD, microtunnelling, auger bores)
- Pre-FEED, FEED, and detailed design for net-zero aligned infrastructure
Regulatory/Compliance Expertise
- Preference for experience with rail (NWR Form A, B & C), road (CD622), and waterway consenting (EA crossings)
Technical Skills
- Construction plant & equipment knowledge
- Geospatial analysis software: ArcGIS, QGIS
- Technical writing & reporting for internal/external delivery
