Senior Hardware Development Engineer - Digital FPGA
Senior Hardware Engineer (Digital FPGA) – Pico Technology
About the Role
As a Senior Hardware Engineer specialising in Digital FPGA at Pico Technology, you will be pivotal in enhancing our high-speed data acquisition architecture. You will:
- Design and implement RTL to interface high-performance ADCs with PC streaming protocols, pushing the limits of measurement innovation.
- Enable hardware-accelerated signal processing, deep memory management, and precision triggering for real-time, ultra-low-latency performance.
- Drive advancements that position our instruments ahead of standard software-based solutions.
Responsibilities
- Lead FPGA functionality design and development, from requirements gathering to VHDL implementation, across high-complexity hardware projects.
- Develop digital logic optimisations to maximise data throughput and minimise latency in high-speed signal processing applications.
- Construct comprehensive test benches, perform in-system debugging, and ensure seamless hardware-software integration.
- Evaluate and select FPGAs for new architectures, balancing performance, cost, availability, and long-term obsolescence risks.
- Conduct performance simulations, prototype designs, and validate reliability to eliminate high-risk issues early.
- Collaborate with the Product Line team on project scoping, estimation, and design reviews, while supporting electronic hardware verification.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
