Senior HSE Advisor
Location Sellafield Site, Cumbria
Reporting To HSE Manager / Project Manager
Purpose of the Role
The Senior HSE Advisor will provide proactive Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) leadership across Altrad projects at Sellafield, ensuring compliance with:
- Statutory requirements
- Sellafield site licence conditions
- Client expectations
- Altrad management systems
Key focus areas:
- Promoting a positive safety culture
- Supporting operational teams in planning and executing work activities
- Driving continuous improvement in HSE performance across project delivery
For Senior HSE Advisor roles, this includes:
- Mentoring junior HSE personnel
- Leading HSE initiatives
- Acting as the primary HSE interface with client representatives and regulatory stakeholders
Key Responsibilities
Health & Safety Leadership
- Provide competent HSE advice to project and site management teams
- Demonstrate visible safety leadership and promote a proactive safety culture
- Support HSE Management Systems implementation and continuous improvement
- Assist in planning activities to identify and control risks before work begins
- Challenge unsafe behaviours and intervene if standards are not maintained
Compliance & Assurance
- Ensure adherence to:
- Health and Safety at Work Act
- CDM Regulations
- Environmental legislation
- Sellafield site requirements
- Altrad procedures and client standards
- Conduct site inspections, audits, and behavioural safety observations
- Monitor subcontractor compliance with project HSE requirements
- Support internal and external audits
Risk Management
- Review and support the development of:
- Risk Assessments
- Method Statements (RAMS)
- Work Packs
- Permit-to-Work documentation
- Ensure suitable control measures are implemented and maintained
- Provide advice on high-risk activities, including:
- Lifting operations
- Confined spaces
- Work at height
- Radiological environments

Incident Management
- Lead or support accident, incident, and near-miss investigations
- Identify root causes and recommend corrective actions
- Ensure lessons learned are communicated effectively across projects
- Maintain accurate incident reporting and conduct trend analysis
Training & Workforce Engagement
- Deliver HSE inductions, toolbox talks, and safety briefings
- Support workforce competency and training requirements
- Facilitate safety stand-downs and engagement campaigns
- Promote reporting of observations, near misses, and good practices
Environmental Management
- Support environmental compliance across project activities
- Monitor:
- Waste management
- Pollution prevention
- Environmental controls
- Promote sustainability and environmental improvement initiatives
Performance Monitoring
- Produce HSE reports and gather KPI data
- Analyse trends and identify opportunities for improvement
- Participate in client meetings and performance reviews
- Support achievement of project and business HSE objectives
Senior HSE Advisor – Additional Responsibilities
- Act as lead HSE representative for allocated projects
- Mentor and coach HSE Advisors and operational supervisors
- Support development and implementation of project HSE strategies
- Interface directly with Sellafield Ltd representatives and regulatory bodies
- Lead significant investigations and improvement programmes
- Deputise for the HSE Manager when required
Qualifications & Experience
Essential
- NEBOSH General Certificate or NEBOSH Construction Certificate
- Membership of IOSH (TechIOSH minimum)
- Experience within construction, engineering, nuclear, or other high-hazard industries
- Strong understanding of UK HSE legislation
- Experience conducting:
- Inspections
- Audits
- Incident investigations
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Ability to:
- Influence workforce behaviours
- Drive safety improvements

Desirable
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent
- GradIOSH or Chartered IOSH status
- Nuclear industry experience
- Sellafield site experience
- Environmental qualification (e.g., IEMA Certificate)
- Internal Auditor qualification
- Radiation Protection or Nuclear Safety awareness training
