Job Overview

Are you an ambitious, experienced Healthcare Support Worker looking for a dynamic opportunity?

The Urology Outpatients team at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust provides specialised care for patients with urological concerns, including:

  • Diagnostic services
  • Andrology support
  • End urology and functional urology
  • Cancer care

We are a tertiary referral centre for the South West, serving patients across Southmead Hospital (Bristol) and Weston-super-Mare.

The successful candidate will:

  • Provide direct patient care without direct supervision, adhering to established policies and procedures.

Key Duties

  • Administrative tasks (scheduling, phone handling, paperwork).
  • Direct patient care (e.g., assisting with examinations, specimens, dressings).
  • Supporting clinicians to provide seamless, patient-centred treatments (e.g., flexible cystoscopy assistants).
  • Health promotion (education, advice on urological health—e.g., catheter care).
  • Maintaining a safe and clean clinic environment (infection control, hygiene).
  • Ordering supplies (medical equipment, Leaflets).
  • Actioning clinical care (e.g., monitoring vitals, glucose checks, wound management).
  • Acting as a chaperone for intimate procedures.
  • Carrying out Point-of-Care testing and documenting results.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential:

  • One of the following healthcare qualifications or equivalent experience:
    • Level 3 (SCQF): NVQ/RQF Diploma in Healthcare Support (Senior Health Care Assistant)
    • Equivalent nursing apprenticeship, certificates, or experience
  • Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (or equivalent)
  • Valid ANTT (Aseptic Non-Touch Technique) training

Desirable:

  • Competent in additional skills, such as venepuncture, secured infection control, laser safety procedures.

Experience & Knowledge

Essential:

  • 12 months+ experience in a Healthcare Support Worker role.
  • Ability to work independently and follow guidelines with minimal supervision.
  • Navigating priority tasks and managing time effectively.
  • Adherence to NHS values (e.g., compassion, dignity) with patients.

Desirable:

  • Experience in an acute/tertiary hospital setting.

Key Skills

Essential:

  • Clear written and verbal communication to document tasks and engage with teams.
  • IT literacy (Microsoft Office, emails, patient systems).
  • Adaptability to shift patterns, patient acuity, and department changes.
  • Emotional resilience—maintaining composure in fast-moving environments.
  • Professionalism and patient-centred care.
