Senior Healthcare Technical Officer (SHTO)
Blood Products Manufacturing & Sampling Support Officer
Job Summary
In this role, you will be manufacturing and sampling blood products, as well as providing vital support to qualified scientific staff. You will be processing blood products after the units have been received from the donors, involving:
- Scanning in units of blood and processing units for safe transfusion, including red cells, platelets, and plasma.
- Supervising small teams within the department.
- Assisting with the training of staff when required.
Vacancies Available
We are recruiting for 2 vacancies:
- Permanent (evening shifts): 16:00 to 24:00, Mondays to Fridays.
- Fixed-term (12 months): Standard day hours, Mondays to Fridays.
Main Duties
- Perform scientific and technical activities related to blood (and where appropriate, tissue) donations, with team support.
- Support and train new and less experienced staff while communicating effectively with team members and internal customers.
- Undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples/donations and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis.
- Handle blood bags and equipment safely and responsibly.
- Meet quality and quantity production goals, prioritising workloads and maintaining accurate documentation.
- Conduct data entry and use computer programs for component production, making decisions based on the visual inspection of blood components.
- Perform complex manufacturing tasks, including:
- Pooled product manufacturing.
- Freezing of components.
- Work variable hours, weekends, and bank holidays as per rosters (with notice as per shift agreements).
- Manually handle equipment up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids.

About You
Experience and Knowledge
- Experience supervising others.
- Experience working with Information Technology (IT), such as Microsoft Office.
Qualifications and Training
- Level 4 qualification, such as a BTEC or HNC in a relevant science subject, or an NHSBT Foundation Degree (or equivalent theoretical knowledge acquired through training).
- Must have worked or trained in a laboratory, manufacturing, or equivalent intermediate-level environment.
- Evidence of personal development and a willingness to undertake further training.
