Senior High Voltage Cable Design Engineer

The Senior High Voltage Cable Design Engineer reports to the Principal Engineer/Managing Director and is responsible for ensuring high-quality output and technical documentation control.
Key Responsibilities
- Project Deliverables: Produce all designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for new or modified HV cabling projects. Tasks include:
- Bonding/line diagrams
- Cable rating, induced voltage, short circuit force, thermo-mechanical thrust, and pulling tension calculations
- Feasibility studies and material specification lists
- Cable thermal analysis and project engineering
- Project & Client Management:
- Meet project deadlines and manage expectations for both project and client stakeholders
- Attend design and hazard review meetings align with project schedules
- Technical Review & Collaboration:
- Conduct thorough reviews of CAD technician-produced drawings
- Contribute to bids and tenders for future work
Career Progression
Opportunities to progress to Principal Engineer and eventually Senior Manager within the business.
Education & Qualifications
Essential
- BEng/BSc/MSc in Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Power Systems, or related field – or equivalent qualifications and experience
Desirable
- Relevant electrical engineering certifications
- Progressing or eligible to enter CEng status
- Progressing or eligible to enter SR137 CDAE

Personal Traits

- Industry standard maths and science (preferably from power engineering background)
Technical Skills & Experience
- Mentoring junior engineers
- HV Cable Design specialisms (key deliverables listed below)
- Proficiency in IEC & CIGRE standards
- Fluency in CYMCAP and COMSOL software
Cable Design Specialisations
- Current ratings (IEC 60287)
- Forced ventilation (cable tunnels)
- Impressed voltage and emergency/overload calculations
- Bonding diagrams, material schedules, and technical specs
- Thermal/resistivity and mechanical thrust computations
- Induced/shelf voltage (SVL), pulling tension, and short circuit force assessments
- Detailed designs for joint bays, trenches, CSE routes, and cable routing layout
Job Requirements & Expectations
- Feasibility Studies & Documents: Prepare, review, and approve technical reports.
- Drawing & Design Approval: Design, verify, and approve detailed drawings.
- Technical Leadership:
- Develop and validate concepts, specs, and documentation
- Conduct site visits to assess cable route and joint bay locations
- Manage engineering teams and external suppliers
- Deliverables: Ensure projects meet deadlines without scope/budget deviations.
- Safety & Revisions: Participate in Design & HAZID reviews and uphold AS Design’s documentation management.
- Quality Control: Highlight risks, mentor CAD technicians, and establish team design standards.
- Communication:
- Coordinate between stakeholders via software (e.g., Civil 3D) and reports
- Understand client-specific technical specifications (e.g., National Grid, SSE)
