The Opportunity
Arup’s Transmission & Distribution Design team operates globally, delivering projects from concept to detailed design for diverse clients, including asset owners, interconnectors, and private wire schemes in the UK. Our specialist electrical design and power systems expertise is integral to large multi-disciplinary projects.
Recently, Arup partnered with AECOM as the design and consenting service partner for UK National Grid’s Great Grid Partnership. Active in energy, transport, nuclear, building, and datacentre sectors, our team supports clients through ambitious infrastructure projects.
We’re currently seeking Senior Engineers in Electrical Design (Transmission) to join our High Voltage team in Manchester, Birmingham, or Bristol.
Is This Role Right for You?
Skills & Experience Required
We’re looking for candidates with the following qualifications and expertise:
- Degree: MSc/MEng/BEng in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Power Systems, or an equivalent qualification.
- Chartership status: Ideally, Chartered Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards it via the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in designing EHV systems (400kV–132kV), including:
- Primary & secondary plant
- Overhead lines & cables
- Proficiency in design/analysis software such as:
- DIgSILENT PowerFactory
- PSCAD
- IPSA, ETAP, ERACS, CDEGS, COMSOL, CymCAP SKM
- Knowledge of UK electrical codes, standards, and compliance frameworks.
- Strong understanding of protection & control systems, along with earthing/grounding designs.
- Ability to deliver resultant designs, including:
- Single-line diagrams
- Protection schemes
- Earthing strategies
- Cable & equipment specifications.
- Collaboration experience with other engineering disciplines.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally as needed, visiting industrial sites.
- Deep commitment to electrical safety, including High Voltage (HV) working practices & design safety assessments.

Desirable Skills and Experience:
- Consultancy experience within a professional engineering firm.
- Expertise in BIM (Building Information Modelling) and digital tools, including:
- CAD platforms (AutoCAD, LS-DYNA, MicroStation, Revit).
- Abilities in supporting or managing:
- Design packages
- Budgets and schedules
- Undertaking tender support and costestimation for electrical design projects.
- Prior experience as a Principal Designer.
- Knowledge of offshore wind farms, battery storage, or HVDC design studies.
- Experience in commissioning, site verification, or construction support.
Role Responsibilities
While technically focused, this role involves:
- Acting as a technical manager on project assignments.
- Assisting in bids and business development initiatives.
