Senior Highways Engineer

Senior Civil Engineer – Highways & Civil Engineering

Arcadis is the world’s leading sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy company for natural and built assets. With over 34,000 employees across 30+ countries, we’re dedicated to improving quality of life through innovative solutions.

Our Highways Civil Engineering team is looking for an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to enhance our technical leadership in delivering high-impact projects.

About the Role

You’ll drive the delivery of key project elements or work packages for major highways schemes, ensuring compliance with quality, programme, and cost targets.

As the role progresses, you’ll take leadership responsibility, mentor junior engineers, and refine digital design capabilities (commented here as OpenRoads Designer BBSite). Ideal for those seeking to expand their expertise in highway alignment, technical guidance, and project oversight.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own project delivery for defined work packages, aligning with scope, programme, cost, and quality requirements.
  • Technical underpinning for engineers and technicians—support delivery, technical development, and year-on-year performance.
  • Apply advanced technical skills in highway geometric design, including horizontal and vertical alignment.
  • Act as a competent/advanced user of OpenRoads Designer and validate digital design processes.
  • Manage scope and assumptions, ensuring clarity for delivery teams.
  • Prepare, review and verify design documents, calculations, and reports.
  • Conduct design checks and technical verification appropriate to level of responsibility.
  • Ensure compliance with design standards (e.g., DMRB, AASHTO) under Government Best Practice guidance.
  • Support survey work and technical inputs from sub-consultants.
  • Contribute to resource planning and workflow coordination for high-value workstreams.
  • Strengthen stakeholder relationships between project teams and clients.
  • Collaborate on technical proposals and project documentation.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
