About the Role
The Senior HR Advisor will provide expert guidance and practical support to managers and employees on a broad range of people’s matters. The role helps maintain fair, consistent, and legally compliant employment practices while supporting a positive workplace culture, effective case management, and early resolution of issues where possible.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely, practical advice to managers and employees on employee relations matters, including disciplinary, grievance, performance, capability, absence, and flexible working.
- Manage and support employee relations casework from initial enquiry through to resolution, ensuring fairness, consistency, confidentiality, and compliance with policy and employment law.
- Guide and coach managers through investigations, formal meetings, hearings, and appeals, including preparation of letters, outcome documentation, and case records.
- Promote early and informal resolutions where appropriate, including coaching managers on effective conversations, mediation, and problem-solving approaches.
- Interpret and apply employment policies, procedures, and terms and conditions accurately and consistently.
- Work collaboratively with HR colleagues, leaders, trade union or employee representatives, occupational health, and external advisers where required.
- Monitor trends in casework, identify risks or recurring themes, and recommend proactive improvements to policy, process, and manager capability.
- Support organizational change activity, consultation processes, and employee communications in line with legal and organizational requirements.
- Maintain accurate, confidential records and produce reports on employee relations activity, outcomes, and trends.
- Contribute to the review and development of employee relations policies, templates, guidance, and training materials.

Skills we can’t do without
- Proven experience in an HR or employee relations advisory role; sound knowledge of UK employment law and HR best practice.
- Strong case management skills with the ability to handle sensitive matters objectively and professionally; excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills; ability to build credibility with managers, employees, and stakeholders at all levels.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines; good judgement, attention to detail, and a solution-focused approach; high level of confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism.
- Competent in using HR systems and Microsoft Office tools for record-keeping and reporting.
Qualifications and Desirable Experience
- CIPD qualification or working towards CIPD accreditation is desirable.
- Experience of supporting formal hearings, appeals, consultation processes, and complex casework is desirable.
- Experience of working with trade unions or employee representatives is beneficial.
- Experience in policy development, manager coaching, and reporting on employee relations data is advantageous.
