Laing O'Rourke is supporting the transformation of the UK's electricity network through the Great Grid Upgrade, and we're looking for a Senior Electrical Design Manager to play a leading role on the Chesterfield substation project.

This is an opportunity to sit at the centre of a nationally significant EHV scheme, shaping design strategy, influencing outcomes, and helping modernise critical infrastructure needed for a net-zero future.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Leading electrical design management across a complex EHV substation project
  • Providing technical leadership across internal teams, designers, and supply chain partners
  • Managing design assurance, compliance, and integration, from early design through to delivery
  • Working closely with construction and project leadership to ensure buildability and programme alignment
  • Acting as a key interface with the client and other external stakeholders

What you'll bring

  • Strong experience in EHV / HV substation design, ideally within major infrastructure programmes
  • A solid grounding in UK standards, safety, and regulatory requirements for transmission assets
  • The confidence to lead design conversations, challenge constructively, and influence at senior level
  • A collaborative mindset, comfortable working across multi-disciplinary and multi-organisational teams
  • Experience balancing technical detail with programme, cost, and delivery priorities

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
