The Opportunity
We are currently seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Senior Hydraulic Modeller to join our River and Coastal Management team permanently. This position would ideally be based in Birmingham; however, we have modelling teams across the UK, including Reading, Bristol, Cambridge, London, Taunton, and Manchester.
We offer a mix of home and office working to maintain a work-life balance and facilitate effective team collaboration. Projects are delivered both nationally and internationally, with occasional travel expected.
Our team delivers technical excellence, providing specialist advice in:
- Flood risk management
- Drainage design
- River restoration
- Nutrient neutrality
- Natural flood management
We work with a diverse range of public and private clients across the UK. Our client-focused approach has established us as one of the leading development consultancies within the market.
Key Responsibilities
You will have the opportunity to:
- Take a lead role in multidisciplinary projects, including:
- River engineering
- Restoration and habitat improvement
- Large-scale mixed developments
- Major infrastructure schemes
- Collaborate with Stantec’s specialties, such as Environmental Planning, Ecology, Transport, and Civils
- Develop methodologies that align with clients’ requirements and industry best practices
- Deliver flood studies on time and within budget while performing self-reviews of your work
- Work independently and collaboratively to support projects through every stage:
- From inception to delivery and closure
- Communicate technical work clearly through written reports and client presentations to:
- Clients, regulators, and non-technical audiences
- Supervise and mentor junior team members, providing technical guidance and reviewing their work
- Assist in preparing fee proposals (some project management experience is desirable but not essential)

About You
Qualifications and Experience
essential:
- Hold a BSc/BEng/MEng degree with a focus on hydrology or hydraulics
- Be chartered (or en route to chartership) by a recognised professional body
Experience in the following areas is mandatory:
- Use of linked 1D/2D hydraulic modelling software, including:
- Flood Modeller
- ESTRY/TUFLOW
- Completion of flood risk and mitigation modelling studies, particularly for:
- Fluvial flooding
- Pluvial flooding
- Hydrological modelling using FEH methods, such as:
- Estimating peak river flows using ReFH2
- Generating flood hydrographs via WINFAP
- Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
- Leadership in national/flood risk management frameworks and planning policy
- Experience mentoring junior staff, including work reviews
Desirable (but advantageous):
- Proficiency in GIS software, such as:
- QGIS
- ArcGIS
- MapInfo
- Use of additional hydraulic modelling packages, including:
- HEC-RAS
- Infoworks ICM
