Senior Indirect Tax Manager
Global Indirect Tax Accountant – Tax Department
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Group Tax Department in a global indirect tax role, providing expert VAT and indirect tax support across OUP’s international operations. The successful candidate will play a key role in protecting and optimising value—aligned with OUP’s charitable mission—ensuring compliance with global tax regulations, while managing risk and supporting strategic business objectives.
Working closely with stakeholders across the organisation, you will act as the lead adviser on VAT and indirect tax matters, offering clear, practical guidance on:
- New products
- Business initiatives
- Routes to market
- Contractual arrangements
You will also:
- Monitor legislative developments and business changes
- Ensure OUP remains compliant and prepared to adapt to evolving tax requirements
- Partner with the Global Process Lead & OneSource Business Owner to support the implementation of global tax systems and process improvements
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee VAT and indirect tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions, including:
- Reviewing and approving VAT returns
- Managing relationships with tax authorities
- Supporting audits and enquiries
- Maintaining oversight of:
- International registrations
- Supply chain activities
- Digital product taxation
- Ensure global filing obligations are met accurately and on time, while driving best practice across local finance teams
- Work under the guidance of the Group Tax Director to:
- Identify and mitigate tax risks
- Contribute to tax strategy development
- Support reporting to senior governance bodies
- Measure success through:
- Effective resolution of business tax matters
- Timely compliance
- Smooth implementation of tax changes
- Minimisation of audit adjustments and disputes
- Proactive global tax risk management

Working Arrangements
Operates a hybrid policy, with a minimum of 2 days per week at the Oxford office.
About You
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Endorsed experience in an Indirect Tax role within a global environment
- Tax or accountancy qualification
- Deep tax technical knowledge of global business, including:
- Expertise in VAT rules, covering:
- Place of supply
- Exemptions
- Reverse charge
- Distance registrations (including IOSS)
- Strong understanding of global VAT/indirect tax regulations, ideally within a multinational corporate setting.
- Expertise in VAT rules, covering:
- Knowledge of Customs issues and regulatory frameworks
- Experience working in an ERP and Tax engine environment, with familiarity of system functionality

Desirable Qualifications
- Understanding of process environments (e.g., Process Transformation Framework (PTP) or Offer to Cash (OTC))
- Familiarity with internal controls for tax/compliance processes
