About the Role
The Senior Information Architect sits within Northern Trust’s Information Architecture team, where they will shape the firm’s enterprise data strategy, data modelling standards, and AI-enabled capabilities. This role demands authority in design and governance across conceptual, logical, and physical data models, with influence over the firm’s cloud data platforms and contributions to AI-driven data products.
Key Responsibilities
Data Modelling & Architecture
- Lead and contribute to conceptual, logical, and physical data model design aligned with the firm’s data mesh and medallion architectures
- Governing and maintaining the enterprise data model library in SQLDBM, reinforcing: Naming conventions Domain standards Versioning
- Define and steward canonical data entities and lineage across: Source layers Integration layers Consumption layers
- Translate business requirements into rigorous data structures while collaborating across engineering and domain teams
- Guide design principles and usage of semantic data models, including applications in agentic AI solutions
Semantic & Knowledge Modelling
- Integrate semantic layers with: Business glossaries Data catalogues Lineage tools
- Design and maintain semantic models supporting agentic-AI capabilities
- Develop and refine ontologies, taxonomies, and controlled vocabularies fundamental for enterprise metadata and search
- Establish semantic modelling standards and patterns to ensure: Consistent meaning Interoperability AI readiness across data products
- Oversee and control data domain design aligned with the bank’s core functional capabilities
Data Engineering & Platforms
- Design Snowflake- and Databricks-based data product schemas, including: Delta Lake structures Access patterns
- Define and enforce architectural guardrails for data product design, including: Performance Scalability Security Cost efficiency
- Define data modelling standards and review: Pipeline development ETL/EL transformations for compliance
- Embed: Data contract standards Data quality frameworks across outputs

Agentic AI & AI-Assisted Development
- Utilize Snowflake Cortex / Databricks Genie to accelerate natural language querying and LLM-augmented data products for engineering teams
- Apply GitHub Copilot or similar AI tools to enhance: Modelling Documentation Pipeline development
- Design and operationalise ELSA agentic skills for teams
- Contribute to the firm’s AI Champion Network, including: Evaluating emerging capabilities Advising on AI delivery strategies
Enterprise Architecture & Design Assurance
- Serve as design authority for data architecture, collaborating across all teams and domains
- Partner with: Enterprise architects Security architects Risk architects To align data solutions with broader tech and regulatory compliance standards
- Deliver early-stage architecture input during initiative discovery and design to reduce delivery risks
Governance & Stakeholder Engagement
- Present architecture decisions openly to: Senior stakeholders Architecture Boards Regulatory bodies
- Ensure regulatory compliance via: Lineage management Metadata management Data quality evidence-based systems
- Mentor junior architects and engineers within the Information Architecture community of practice
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Criteria
- Proven experience in data architecture, data engineering, or information management
- Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Hands-on experience with: Enterprise data modelling (all levels) SQLDBM (or equivalent robust toolsets) dbt Labs
- Business-level proficiency in: Python, API integrations
- Technical proficiency in: Snowflake and Databricks (including Cortex AI/Genie)
- Familiarity with: OWL, RDF, SPARQL
- Working exposure to: An agentic AI framework A GitHub Copilot or equivalent in a professional capacity
Preferred Criteria
- Technical aptitude in Data Vault 2.1 and familiar with functional hybrid Kimball/Star schema
- Knowledge of a data mesh strategy and federated governance frameworks
- Experience with knowledge graph platforms (Neo4j, Amazon Neptune) and/or building ontologies with OWL, RDF
- Public thought leadership in data or AI domains
