We are recruiting a Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Linux, AWS & Database Platforms)
The purpose of the role is to ensure that critical infrastructure remains secure, stable, resilient and well maintained. The successful candidate will be expected to support current Linux and AWS workloads and progressively contribute to broader infrastructure operations, including database administration, Azure services, backup and recovery, patching, monitoring and technical documentation.
About the business
Flogas Britain is one of the largest distributors of off-grid energy in the UK and has 40 years’ experience of providing solutions to both commercial and domestic customers, principally in the form of liquid gas. The business has a longstanding record of organic growth driven by new installations, underpinned by a strong technical engineering expertise and capability, which combined with several bolt-on acquisitions has resulted in its market share increasing from 10% to over 30%.
The business is at the forefront of the energy transition having developed a prominent track record in converting customers from higher emissions fuels to lower carbon and cleaner solutions for the last decade and is now well placed with a significant range of opportunities to develop and diversify into New Energies into the future in line with our 2040 vision to provide 100% renewable solutions to customers.
Flogas has been highly acquisitive in executing this strategy, investing over £50 million in the recent acquisitions of Protech, DTGen and Equity Energies, bringing together a compelling proposition of products, technologies, and services to support customers in navigating their energy needs through the transition and to execute their strategies in regard to energy cost, security and carbon emissions on their own pathway to net zero.
Flogas Britain has revenues of around £400 million and employs over 1,500 people across its multi-site operation across Britain with its headquarters in Syston, Leicestershire.
Role Purpose
The purpose of the role is to ensure that critical infrastructure remains secure, stable, resilient and well maintained. The successful candidate will be expected to support current Linux and AWS workloads and progressively contribute to broader infrastructure operations, including database administration, Azure services, backup and recovery, patching, monitoring and technical documentation.

Key Responsibilities
- Administer, maintain and support Linux server environments, Rocky Linux (based on RedHat) and other enterprise Linux distributions.
- Maintain AWS-hosted infrastructure, including EC2 instances, load balancers, security groups, backups, monitoring and availability configuration.
- Support Azure infrastructure and services where required, including virtual machines, storage, access management, monitoring and operational support.
- Provide database administration support across MariaDB, MySQL and other relevant database technologies, including performance monitoring, backup, recovery, access control and routine maintenance.
- Ensure servers, databases and infrastructure components are regularly patched, updated, secured and compliant with operational standards.
- Monitor infrastructure health, capacity, performance and availability, proactively identifying risks, issues and improvement opportunities.
- Maintain backup, disaster recovery and failover arrangements to support business continuity and minimise service downtime.
- Support LAN, WAN and network-related administration where required, including basic troubleshooting, connectivity checks and escalation to specialist teams.
- Maintain operational documentation, configuration records, support processes and knowledge transfer materials to reduce reliance on individual knowledge.
- Participate in incident response, root cause analysis and service restoration activities, including out-of-hours support where required.
Essential Experience and Skills
- Strong hands-on experience administering Linux servers in production environments.
- Experience managing infrastructure in AWS, including EC2, load balancing, monitoring, security and backup services.
- Database administration experience, ideally with MariaDB, MySQL or comparable relational database platforms.
- Good understanding of server hardening, patch management, access control, security monitoring and vulnerability remediation.
- Experience with virtualisation and infrastructure technologies such as KVM, data centre hardware, Dell servers, storage and RAID.
- Strong scripting or shell programming skills to automate routine administration, monitoring and maintenance tasks.
- Understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, firewalls, basic networking concepts and infrastructure troubleshooting.
- Ability to work independently, think on their feet and manage critical infrastructure with care, accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document technical processes clearly and work collaboratively with internal teams and third-party suppliers.

Desirable Experience
- RedHat Certified Engineer or equivalent Linux administration certification.
- Experience supporting hybrid infrastructure across cloud and on-premises environments.
- Practical experience supporting Azure infrastructure or a willingness and capability to extend existing cloud administration skills into Azure.
- Experience with monitoring and alerting tools, including configuration, tuning and continuous improvement of monitoring thresholds.
- Experience supporting high-availability, failover and disaster recovery arrangements.
- Knowledge of infrastructure security best practice, audit requirements and operational risk management.
- Experience creating or maintaining infrastructure runbooks, support guides and technical handover documentation.
Key Competencies
- Infrastructure administration across Linux, AWS and database environments, with Azure exposure considered beneficial.
- Operational ownership, reliability focus and a proactive approach to maintenance and risk reduction.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially during incidents or service-impacting events.
- Ability to balance immediate support needs with longer-term infrastructure improvement and knowledge transfer.
- Security-conscious mindset with a clear understanding of access control, patching, monitoring and backup responsibilities.
- Collaborative working style, with the ability to support wider IT, data, development and business teams.
