Job Title: Senior Innovation Engineer

Location: SPHQ, Glasgow

Salary: from £55,000 to £68,750

SP Energy Networks has been successful in securing regulatory funding under the Strategic Innovation Fund (SIF) and Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) mechanism, which is a new provision under the RIIO T2 and ED2 settlement.

Reporting to the Future Networks Manager and Project Steering Board where applicable, the Senior Innovation Engineer (and Project Manager) will provide a project management (including financial control), programme coordination and technical direction for the SP Energy Networks delivery team, liaising closely with internal stakeholders and external project partners.

Principally focusing on delivery of the assigned projects which has various delivery programme (from the Ofgem approval), the Senior Project Manager will also facilitate further proposals of subsequent R&D projects under the SIF, NIA and Innovation Rollout Mechanism (IRM) regulatory frameworks.


What you’ll be doing

Project Management

  • Propose, Plan, Co-ordinate and Lead innovation projects activity including a sustainable innovation pipeline; budgetary control, scheduling and logistical aspects
  • Act with your own initiative and independently to keep the project well managed, without direct guidance from line management
  • Ensuring the compliance of Network Innovation Allowance and Strategic Innovation Fund Governance: proposing and delivering projects safely, on time and fulfilling all regulatory requirements
  • Produce and maintain a programme of project activities using an appropriate project management tool
  • Identify risks, propose and implement effective migration measures proactively
  • Make professional judgements and ensure timely delivery of reports to the Project Steering Group and line manager(s)
  • Supervision and support all procurement activity associated with the project work packages
  • Co-ordination with Suppliers on the specification, scheduling, delivery and acceptance of contracted products and services; ensure the customers interests (both current and future) and safety are protected in negotiations
  • Ensure project expenditure is in line with the budgetary provision
  • To support and Coordination of the installation of hardware, software, communication systems and IT equipment associated with the projects
  • Any other reasonable responsibilities/activities required to safeguard a satisfactory project delivery

Expertise

  • SME of regulated network business (electricity transmission networks preferred) and its engineering foundations
  • Accountable for the review and audit of all project deliverables within and beyond the Project directions, including specifications, commercial indications of engineering specifications, compliance with technical standards, data validation, modelling tools etc. with the input of technical specialists where appropriate
  • Primary point of contact for all technical matters relating to the innovation projects for both internal & external queries/actions
  • Continued Improvements
  • Take ownership and initiative to contribute to the continued success of the department and the company by generating, facilitating new proposal/projects
  • Present as a positive, constructive, supportive team member and team leader
  • Set the role model when it comes to professional behaviour and integrity

What you’ll bring

  • Strong organisation and project management skills across cross functional work streams
  • Highly self-motivated and self-confident individual with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, capable of influencing and coordinating the action of peers and influencing discussions with competitors
  • Well-developed technical knowledge of electrical engineering principles; alternatively, have in-depth experience and understanding of the energy trading framework (such as DSO, TSO)
  • Technical understanding of all areas of system quality of supply and associated monitoring techniques (i.e. the interface of forecasting, real time energy trading, IT/communications infrastructure)
  • Confident to lead/coordinate a team in a technology challenging project with complex interface and multiple stakeholders
  • Good interpersonal skills with good English written and oral communication skills
  • Project management tools
  • Microsoft office package including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
  • Ability to influence and lobby both internal and external stakeholders to gain agreement and acceptance of solution and implementation approaches
