About the Role
We’re seeking a Senior Interaction Designer to join our fast-paced Home Office Digital Enablers Portfolio Channels Team.
You’ll create user-centred designs for the Home Office SharePoint intranet and other internal channels, ensuring they are simple, secure, and accessible to all users.
Key projects may include:
- Enhancing the user experience (UX) and new features of our SharePoint intranet, including the Home Office Directory.
- Developing and refining internal systems such as the Ideas Lab, SharePoint communication sites, and content sections.
- Assisting with new SharePoint page designs, improving design templates, and creating prototypes based on user-led research.
- Supporting senior user researchers in Discovery and Alpha phases.
You’ll collaborate closely with:
- Internal communication teams
- Senior Home Office stakeholders across digital services, technical teams, and policy officials

Responsibilities
Your ** core daily tasks** will include:
- Applying government design standards and best practices to Home Office services.
- Line-managing, mentoring, and training junior interaction designers, allocating tasks, and providing guidance, constructive feedback, and ongoing skill development.
- Championing user needs to design simple, effective, and inclusive services.
- Creating prototypes and concepts, conducting user testing, and refining designs through evidence.
- Mapping user journeys, processes, and visualising design challenges.
- Facilitating collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, assisting in workshops, research activities, and stakeholder decision-making.

- Evidence-based design – Leads initiatives for complex projects, mentors junior staff on research-driven methodologies.
- Prototyping and concept creation – Manages high-impact prototyping, applies advanced techniques, and advises on team practice.
- Interaction design – Guides complex projects, balancing user needs, technical considerations, and business objectives.
- Accessibility and inclusion – Ensures adherence to standards, understanding web technology constraints.
- People management – Coaches designers, fosters skill growth, and delivers construction feedback.
- Communication – Advocates for user-centred design (UCD) across varied stakeholders, ensuring clarity.
