About the Role
Railpen, responsible for securing £34 billion in assets and administering several pension schemes (including the UK’s largest, the Railways Pension Scheme), is recruiting two Internal Audit Managers—senior roles offering high exposure, accountability, and influence across our business and governance structures.
This is an opportunity for experienced Internal Audit professionals who excel at delivering outcomes, exercising judgement, and providing independent, decision-useful insights in a complex environment. We’re particularly interested in candidates who embrace modern assurance—moving beyond siloed evaluations to deliver thematic insights, connected assurance, and proportionate, risk-focused work that shapes strategic decisions.

Key Responsibilities
As an Internal Audit Manager, reporting to the Chief Internal Auditor and working closely with the Head of Operations, you will:
- Own delivery of Internal Audit activity across assigned portfolios:
- Ensure timely, coordinated, and high-quality completion of engagements
- Prioritise work based on risk, proportionate assurance, and decision-making impact
- Transform audit findings into clear, credible, and actionable insights

Provide authoritative challenge in governance:
- Engage with senior leaders, Trustees, and Board/Committee forums
- Offer independent insight and risk-driven challenge on governance, control, and strategy

Drive thematic and interconnected assurance:
- Identify patterns, root causes, and cross-portfolio insights
- Strengthen organisation-wide understanding to support better decision-making

Lead complex/sensitive engagements:
- Personally direct high-risk work requiring advanced judgement or technical expertise
- Balance demands for judgement with adherence to audit standards

Sharpen the function’s capabilities:
- Evolve methodologies using delivery insights (quality reviews, stakeholder feedback)
- Explore emerging areas such as audit quality, tech/data transformation, or AI-driven assurance (complementary to core delivery focus)

Build trusted stakeholder relationships:
- Maintain independence while offering constructive challenge
- Address ambiguity and facilitate work through interdisciplinary collaboration
Key Expected Traits
You will thrive if you:
- Have portfolio-level delivery experience in Internal Audit, with track record in translating work into outcomes
- Operate confidently in senior environments, including governance or Trustee committees
- Demonstrate strong risk-aware judgement, balancing pragmatism and principle
- Articulate complex findings clearly: turn audit work into evidence-based conclusions that resonate with decision-makers
- Demonstrate coaching skills—support team growth through feedback, encouragement without hierarchy
- Commit to continuous quality improvement, refining processes based on real-world lessons
- Bring a senior influence mindset: operate decisively in transparent accountability
