About The Role
Vision
The Natural History Museum’s public space plan, marking NHM 150, seeks to transform existing spaces into world-leading galleries alongside high-impact temporary exhibitions. This role is critical to achieving this transformation.
Purpose
The Senior Interpretation Developer develops evidence-based, engaging narratives and interpretations for exhibitions and galleries, working closely with colleagues from Science, Design, Audience Research, Collections and Exhibition Leads across the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate to co-design and deliver stories for new exhibitions, galleries and public spaces, ensuring they are visitor-centric, scientifically robust and aligned with our mission to inspire planetary advocacy.
- Lead content work packages for exhibitions/galleries, managing timelines and overseeing delivery from concept to opening.
- Identify core themes, narratives and key exhibits by conducting rigorous audience and object research, ensuring discoveries and methods are accessible and inspiring to diverse visitors.
- Develop interactive and AV concepts, writing details for high-quality exhibit production, and testing prototypes to ensure alignment with site strategy.
- Spearhead outreach and fundraising by presenting and pitching ideas to stakeholders, partners and funders.
- Coordinate curatorial and collections-based content, ensuring the provision of authentic specimens/indexed materials meets project and ethical standards (in consultation with Beer Pavilion specialists, STEM curators practitioners or equivalent).
- Partner with PR and social media teams to promote new exhibits externally, managing press engagement and public storytelling.

About You
We seek a driven Interpretation Developer with:
Core Qualifications
- A degree or equivalent experience in exhibition theory, museum studies, design, science, education or a related discipline.
- Minimum three years of experience devising visitor-centred narratives for exhibitions or large-scale content projects, preferably within museum(science/natural history/education) or cultural sectors.
- Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with experience creating digitally-native audience materials or technology integration for exhibits.
Key Skills
- Collection research and interpretation – Ability to synthesize complex scientific ideas into engaging visitor experiences.
- Audience-centric thinking – Strong insight into how behavioural data shapes interpretation.
- Collaboration – Experience across cross-functional teams (e.g., AV producers, scientists and designers).
- Fundraising and stakeholder relations – Expertise at discussing project proposals and securing partnerships.
Personal Attributes
- Empathy and passion for protecting biodiversity and climate science.
- Proposal design skills – Ability to translate concepts into funding presentations.
- Progressive iterative approaches to project development.
- Strict confidentiality with administering access controls.
