Senior Project Manager
Location: Walton Park Type: Full-time | Hybrid Reference: REQ5797
About the Role
The Senior Project Manager will lead complex projects spanning multiple business workstreams, applications, or technology platforms. With extensive expertise in diverse project management methodologies, this role requires strong competencies in planning, budgeting, risk and change management, and ensuring high-quality project delivery across the full systems development lifecycle (SDLC).
The Senior Project Manager will:
- Oversee projects dictated by regulatory changes (e.g., Ofgem) or troubled projects needing revitalisation.
- Ensure accountability for budget adherence, resource management, and stage-gate compliance.
- Coach junior project managers (if applicable) and provide line management where necessary.
- Escalate critical issues to senior management/Portfolio Leads as required.

Key Responsibilities
Methodology & Processes
- Full lifecycle ownership, managing simultaneous large or minor projects from initiation to deployment.
- Align projects with strategic business objectives, ensuring anticipated benefits are achieved.
- Apply SGN’s project delivery methodology while maintaining excellence, innovation, and team dynamics.
- Drive process improvements that enhance project delivery efficiency.
Stakeholder & People Management
- Foster relationships with stakeholders in IT, business units, and third-party suppliers.
- Lead consultation processes to address stakeholder needs throughout the project lifecycle.
- Resolve conflicts, negotiate agreements, and maintain cross-organisational relationships.
- Mentor junior PMs, clarify roles, and manage project teams during all phases.
- Coordinate with Procurement, Legal, and external partners for regulated contract processes.
- Present communication to Senior Management and Portfolio Leads.

Financial Control
- Manage and track the approved project budget, ensuring accurate cost reporting.
- Escalate cost overruns beyond contingency to Portfolio Leads.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through requirement analysis (across projects/programs).
Risk & Issue Management
- Proactively identify, track, and mitigate risks, dependencies, and critical path delays.
- Review risk/issue dependencies to assess impact on overarching programmes.
Planning & Resources
- Develop detailed project plans in collaboration with stakeholders, clients, and consultants.
- Monitor adherence to scope, timelines, quality standards, and milestones.
- Adapt to shifting priorities with analytical problem-solving, ensuring scope/schedule alignment.
- Procure resources (internal/external) to achieve time-bound objectives.
Project Closure
- Capture "lessons learned" for PMO continuous improvement initiatives.
- Review business cases and benefits realisation with project sponsors.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to refining processes, policies, and tools for sustainable improvements.
- Access opportunities to streamline SGN’s project delivery excellence.
Line Management
- Provide mentorship/career development to project teams via Quarterly Performance Reviews and support.
- Conduct quality checks via project reviews, addressing skill gaps/training needs.
What You’ll Need
Education
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field OR equivalent experience.
- PRINCE 2 Practitioner certification.
- (Desirable) ITIL, MSP, or other project management certifications.

Experience
- ≥10 years in IT Project or Change Management.
- Hands-on experience with budgeted projects (>£2m) and complex, multi-platform projects.
- Proven track record of delivering on-time, on-budget projects via Agile/Waterfall frameworks.
- Experience with software development, application/infrastructure migrations, and third-party vendors (on/offshore).
- Actively managed teams (mentoring/scrutiny) during project engagements.
