IT Senior Project Manager

About the Role
The Senior Project Manager will have extensive experience in various project management methodologies and techniques, with strong competencies in:
- Project planning
- Budget and time management
- Scope, risk, and change management
This role involves leading teams to deliver complex, high-budget, or failing projects, including those requiring legislative compliance (e.g., Ofgem directives), while ensuring adherence to stage-gate quality and control guidelines throughout the full systems development lifecycle.
Key responsibilities include:
- Resource, schedule, and financial management
- Process improvement initiatives to enhance project delivery
- Mentoring less experienced PMs and, where applicable, line management of permanent project staff
- Daily project oversight, ensuring deliverables meet quality, time, and cost constraints for defined business benefits
- Stakeholder and senior management reporting as required
Key Responsibilities
Methodology & Processes
- Full lifecycle ownership: Lead initiation to deployment for major or multiple minor initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives and successful delivery.
- Manage multi-related projects to support strategic goal achievement.
- Work creatively and analytically in problem-solving environments, demonstrating innovation, teamwork, and excellence.
- Align projects with SGN’s project delivery methodologies, processes, and quality standards.
- Ensure project outcomes meet success criteria within business case constraints.
Stakeholder & People Management
- Build and maintain relationships with IT, business stakeholders, and third-party suppliers to share progress updates.
- Lead stakeholder consultations throughout the project lifecycle.
- Resolve conflicts, negotiate, and maintain working relationships across all organisational levels (internal/external).
- Lead and mentor project teams and junior Project Managers.
- Ensure clear role definitions for all project team members.
- Collaborate with Procurement for third-party engagements and regulated tender processes (coordinating with Legal).
- Provide senior-level and portfolio communications.

Financial Control
- Oversee and manage approved project budgets.
- Ensure cost accuracy in estimates, reporting, and reviews (with Portfolio Leads).
- Escalate to Portfolio Lead if contingency budgets are exceeded.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities via inter-project optimisation.
Risk & Issue Management
- Monitor, track, and resolve issues, conflicts, dependencies, and critical deliverables.
- Assess risks/dependencies for strategic program impact.
- Proactively minimise risks wherever possible.
Planning & Resources
- Develop and implement project/program plans (with stakeholders/consultants).
- Track, monitor, and communicate progress vs. plans, quality standards, and milestones.
- Adjust business requirements/scope/timelines as needed.
- Prepare detailed project plans and resource allocations to meet objectives.
- Recognise interdependencies between technology, operations, and business needs.
Project Closure
- Capture lessons learnt for PMO improvements.
- Review business case and benefit delivery with Project Sponsors.
- Define and assign follow-up action owners.
Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to project templates, policies, and innovation.
- Propose process/document enhancements for efficiency.
Line Management
- Mentor/coach Project Managers on escalations/advice.
- Identify skill gaps/training needs in team members.
- Conduct project reviews (internal quality control checks).
- Oversee staff performance for quarterly reviews.
Requirements
Education
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field or equivalent work experience.
- PRINCE 2 Practitioner certification.
- Desirable: ITIL, MSP (Managing Successful Programmes), or other project certifications.

Experience
- >10 years in IT/Project/Change Management.
- Management of projects/programmes exceeding £2m.
- Proven track record of on-time, on-budget, on-schedule delivery.
- Experience with high-complexity projects spanning business areas/applications/technology.
- Conducted project quality/assurance reviews.
- Work on software development, app, and infrastructure projects using:
- Agile and Waterfall methodologies.
- Collaborated with third-party (on/offshore) vendors.
- Managed/motivated teams (mentoring/line management, including permanent staff).
- Strong communication skills (written/oral) with technical/non-technical stakeholders.
Desired Experience
- Cloud computing (delivery/migration) experience.
- Lean/Kanban implementations.
- Utility sector knowledge.
- Maturity aspects: Attention to detail, adaptability, assertiveness, collaborative mindset.
