Job Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Java Engineer based in the United Kingdom.

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable payment solutions within a modern software environment.

This role offers the opportunity to contribute to high-impact microservices, participate in architectural decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

The successful candidate will work closely with developers, testers, analysts, and business stakeholders in an Agile delivery environment.

You will help create reliable, high-performance applications while solving complex technical challenges across distributed systems.

This position is ideal for engineers who enjoy innovation, continuous learning, and working with modern backend technologies.

Accountabilities

The Senior Java Engineer will be responsible for developing robust backend solutions, supporting payment platforms, and contributing to technical decisions throughout the software lifecycle. Key responsibilities include:

  • Design, develop, maintain, and support scalable payment solutions and backend microservices.
  • Participate in architectural discussions and contribute to technical solution design with architects, analysts, and engineering teams.
  • Collaborate with frontend developers, testers, business analysts, and other specialists within Agile Scrum teams.
  • Engage with stakeholders to understand business challenges and translate requirements into effective technical solutions.
  • Create and execute Proof of Concepts (PoCs) when required to validate technical approaches.
  • Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production incidents and application performance issues.
  • Participate actively in Scrum ceremonies, including planning, estimations, progress reporting, and team discussions.
  • Ensure software delivery meets quality standards, technical requirements, and project timelines.
  • Identify opportunities to improve application usability, efficiency, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Support other developers, contribute to multiple projects, and provide assistance during critical business periods through team rotations.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will bring strong backend engineering expertise, experience with Java ecosystems, and the ability to solve complex technical challenges in distributed environments. Required qualifications include:

  • 5+ years of professional experience developing Java applications across diverse software projects.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in computer science, software engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong proficiency in Java 11+, Spring Framework, and SQL, with preference for MySQL experience.
  • Experience with Java-based ORM technologies, particularly JPA and Hibernate.
  • Strong knowledge of designing and implementing RESTful APIs and web services.
  • Solid understanding of Java concurrency, multithreading, and JVM fundamentals.
  • Experience working with Maven, Linux environments, and software development best practices.
  • Knowledge of asynchronous messaging systems, especially Kafka.
  • Experience with CI/CD tools and automation platforms such as GitLab.
  • Ability to develop high-quality, reliable, and maintainable software solutions.
  • Experience working in Agile environments, particularly Scrum methodologies.
  • Ability to monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize Java applications in production environments.
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building high-volume, highly transactional distributed server applications.
  • Familiarity with distributed caching technologies such as Hazelcast or Redis.
  • Practical experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of the Quarkus framework.
  • Experience developing back-office applications using JavaScript frameworks such as React or Angular.
  • Previous experience in payments, online gaming, or other transaction-heavy industries.
