Senior Java Developers (Kafka & Kotlin) – 12-Month Contract | Canary Wharf | Inside IR35

Location: Canary Wharf, London (3 days per week onsite)
Contract Length: 12 Months
Engagement Type: Inside IR35
Start Date: ASAP / Flexible
Rate: £800 (Inside IR35)

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developers to join a high-performing engineering team delivering large-scale, business-critical systems within a fast-paced enterprise environment.

This role is ideal for a developer with over 10 years of commercial software engineering experience and a strong background in Java, event-driven architectures, Kafka, and Kotlin. You will play a key role in designing, developing, and enhancing scalable distributed applications while collaborating closely with architects, product teams, and fellow engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java-based applications.
  • Build and enhance event-driven microservices using Kafka.
  • Develop robust backend services and APIs using Java and Kotlin.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions and technical design decisions.
  • Ensure code quality through testing, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues.
  • Work collaboratively within Agile delivery teams.
  • Mentor junior developers and provide technical leadership where required.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 10+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
  • Strong commercial experience with Apache Kafka.
  • Proven experience developing applications using Kotlin.
  • Strong understanding of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Experience building RESTful APIs and backend services.
  • Excellent knowledge of Spring Boot and related Java frameworks.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern DevOps practices.
  • Strong understanding of software design patterns and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working within Agile/Scrum environments.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Knowledge of containerisation technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Experience in financial services, banking, or capital markets environments.
  • Exposure to event sourcing and streaming architectures.
